New Ford Explorer getting ecoboost engine?

I've heard through varoius sources that the new Explorer may get the ecoboost engine but that it will be a 2.0l I4 and NOT the 3.5l version. I don't know why they can't offer both. The freakin Flex has the ecoboost V6 why can't the explorer get it too? Hopefully Ford will offer the V6 ecoboost on the Explorer. I'm looking for a new SUV with decent mileage and towing capabilities and the larger ecoboost would rock in the explorer. I test drove one this morning and its now on my short list of vehicles along with the F150.

Anyone know more about this issue?

2.0 Ecoboost has more hp/torque than the 4.6L V8 that was in a lot of full size heavy stuff not that long ago. Should be fine, but nothing super exciting. Hopefully it delivers killer fuel economy for that segment.
 
Are they going to make the Exploder smaller too? Seems like a 2.0l I4 would be underpowered in a vehicle that large.

Did they ever put the ecoboost in the fusion or focus? They kept talking about it, but never did it.

It will have around 240HP and 250TQ. Should be plenty. It completely outclasses the V6 that used to power most of them. The 4 banger will only be available in the front wheel drive version, supposedly.

That 2.0L EB engine will also be in the next Taurus.

Keep in mind that the Explorer is front wheel drive based.
 
If the torque curve of the 2L EB engine is like other EB engines, the 4 cylinder will probably feel pretty lively.

It is, they are all over the place. The 4 cylinder is coming a bit later. They all have a 290HP/255TQ Duratec 3.5L V6 in them for now.

The 4 cylinder will have about the same torque, probably over a nice wide band.

Edit, yep:

237 hp (177 kW) at 5500 rpm, 250 lb·ft (339 N·m) at 1750-4500 rpm
 
It is already out. But we were just discussing whether or not it will be getting the V6 ecoboost engine. It looks like it is not.

The 4 cylinder is supposedly going to be priced higher. So it probably won't make any sense to buy one with it. Likely the fuel economy advantage will be eaten up by the extra cost of the GTDI engine.

Why do you assume this?

The Chevy Cruze is one vehicle where the bigger engine only comes on the base model. The better and more expensive models have a smaller engine that has about the same power but way more torque and better gas mileage.

It was in the press release for the engine, the F-150 is the same way.

Side note: I see these things EVERYWHERE, they are selling like hotcakes.

I'm also seeing like 5-6 Nissan Leafs a day now on my commute.

I'm going to hold off a couple of years until I jump on the ecoboost band wagon, until the reliability is better known. I certainly hope they turn out to be the wonder engines that they appear to be, maybe I'm too skeptical but a 2L boosted 4 banger with HP and TQ numbers that rival a V8 seem too good to be true. To me to squeeze all that performance out of a small 2L engine something has to be sacrificed and the obvious sacrifice would seem to be reliability.
 
The 2011 Explorer was supposed to debut with the 2.0L I-4 Ecoboost (Ford even had it listed on the website and in the Order Guide, albeit with no mpg numbers) and then also be offered in the 2011 Edge. Then it turned into late availability for 2011. Now it's supposed to be in the 2012 Explorer and Edge, and also at least the 2013 Taurus.

Given the slip, if it slips more, one wonders WTF is wrong keeping it from being introduced...

EDIT: It will be an increased $$$ option over the normal 3.5L V-6, and only be offered in FWD. And, at least on the Explorer, no towing package for it - remains to be seen on Edge (Explorer comes with Class III, Edge comes with Class II, so maybe the Edge will be able to have it).

a GTDI engine costs way more to make...

It's already been announced all over the place that the GTDI 4 will be priced higher.

Perhaps when it actually debuts, Ford will have re-thought pricing, but I doubt it.

Reliability is already well known, isn't it? Lots of testing has been done and the engines were already available in Europe.
 
I think Ford is just introducing the 2.0 I-4 EB in EU. DI and Turbo though have been around for a while, check out VAG.
 
Yeah, we already know they're extremely reliable. The real problem is capacity for expected demand. They're working on it.

no one has any idea why the EB 3.5 is available in the flex but not the explorer.

you could just... i dunno... get the flex? it's a better vehicle in practically every way

Lower tow cap

Too low to the ground

Kinda ugly. (Not hideous though)

The more I keep researching vehicles the more I come back to a F150 with the base 3.7l V6. In the extend cab config it still has a 5500 lb tow cap, gets decent mileage and would have a lower price tag. I have yet to test drive that engine so I don't know how it feels. I won't be buying for several more months so I have some time to hang back and do some more research.
