I think it sounds pretty good, but this guy makes a good point...

"If they don't feel the impact they're delivering, they might hit somebody a little harder," says Christopher Withnall of Biokinetics and Associates. "What we don't know is how the game will be elevated."

If I recall there was a player recently who still got a concussion even when using this helmet.

No helmet can stop the brain from smacking back and forth against the skull.

Really?

I was under the impression that this is the first season it's been in use....

Actually, that's exactly how they're supposed to work. The lining is supposed to allow your head a moment to decelerate gently, rather than coming to a stop instantaneously. Obviously, they can't protect against all foreseeable impacts, and concussions happen.

I believe it was Kordell Stewart. I know he suffered a concussion in a pre-season game and I am pretty sure he was wearing one of the new helmets.

He did sustain a concussion, but was not wearing the new helmet. He is going to wear it now.

<snip from the article above>

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart's decision to try the new helmet last week after sustaining a concussion in a game against the Washington Redskins has helped bring the issue of concussions and helmets back into the spotlight.

This "news" has been around for a while (at least 2-3 weeks).

It certainly wasn't Kordell. He decided to switch after receiving the concussion.

Anyway, if anyone wants to know how it's different, the helmet extends a little lower to protect the jaw area. Apparently, a high percentage of concussions in the NFL occur from blows to the jaw area. The padding is rearranged a little and the holes on the top of the helmet are larger (I don't know what this is supposed to do. You can go to Riddell's website and find out).

edit: Here's the link to their website. I guess the bigger holes are just for breathing room.
