You should keep your DVD burner firmware updated as they don't just fix problems but they also improve compatiblity and performance with various old and new media.

Firmware was posted to sites on May 9th.

The firmware (1.07) for the 712 series is available on the official US site:
http://www.plextor.com/english/support/support_downloads.html

The firmware (1.07) for the 716 series is on the Plextor Europe site in Belgium (so I'm not sure that this is an official release for American users - use at your own risk:
http://www.plextor.be/download/ftp1/716A107.exe The latest firmware for the 716 on the US site is 1.06 get it from the 712 link.

New midlevel burner for those that don't need all the features of the 716 flagship but still hanker for Plextor reliability and performance. Here's a link to the news story on CDFreaks.com: PX-740A.

Thanks Zepper. This is one of those things I forget to check on.
The 1.05 increased the write speed to 12X.

Zepper although Plextor is still in Japan the OEM Drives I've seen are now made in China so i was wondering if you (or anyone) has a Retail Kit and confirm where the newer Drives are made from?
TIA

Final assembly on all Plextor drives is now done in the PRC. But some parts and sub-assemblies are still MiJ. This fact may have contributed to the teething problems they had with the first batch or so of the 716A - but more probably had to do with rushing to meet a contract with Best Buy for the 2004 Christmas season sellathon. BB was the only place to get one for some time before anyone else in the states had any to sell - perhaps Plextor also had some contracts with big resellers elsewhere too. IAC, both of them got black eyes on that one. Maybe Plextor will learn from it - there's little hope for BB...

. My retail 712A was also made in China (I admit I was disappointed when I saw that on the drive label - hard to tell from the outside of the box) and they were Platinum from day one - one of the best optical drives ever made.

Appreciate the info Zepper and I'm still waiting for the Slot to become available for my Personal use...do to it's delay, it may ne MJ although after your response I don't think I have much to worry about as the quality of Plextor does not seem to have missed a beat!

I've read a rumor on one of the forums that the new 740 may be a Benq in wolf's clothing... I'm pretty much discounting that because Plextor has stuck with Sanyo for many years now - I doubt they would be interested in a Phillips licensed mechanism at this late date.
