New finder

OH MY GOSH

Also, Snow only 🙁 Us FCP users stuck on 10.5 for compatibility are hosed...

I don't know, I guess I am not hard core enough, but really, I like the regular Finder, and I do not like having tabs on my finder windows. I want separate windows for when I am either comparing or dragging. Much like why I do not like text editors with tabs.

Same here I would prefer separate windows, it is comfortable for me...

For me.. I'm just a picky person...

I liked the idea of Total Finder, but I can't stand to use it because of:

1) Chrome Tabs (just ugly)
2) Janky animations upon window opens (it would expand into view then fade in.. just looked really odd every time I opened a window)
3) No dragging into tabs
4) Dual Pane mode is a hideous hack at the moment.

I'm sure these things will get sorted, but at the moment.. I don't find it to be up to par "visually" with other Mac apps and thus I've stopped using it.

Its pretty new, still has some issues but stability seems good. They really need drag and drop to tabs. Or its kinda useless... but still better than finder. ftff

Since I am obviously missing something, what do you guys feel the Finder is missing such that one would need PathFinder or this?

yep. installed it, and literally for these exact reasons, uninstalled it within an hour...

I don't know if I've just gotten really used to Finder.. but I don't really find Finder lacking that much any more. When I first started using it, I really hated it, but once I started using SizeUp... and got used to the Spring Loaded Folders, I've loved it.

I own a license for PathFinder and while it's nice, there just aren't enough features in it that I find myself wanting to keep it loaded, especially with the overhead that it creates on my system.

A couple areas I could see where Apple could improve Finder..

1) A drag box (maybe something that's toggle-able)
2) Stop spinning up every locally connected drive when I open a Finder window (this drives me absolutely bonkers!!)
3) Safari-esque Tabs (hidden unless you have more than one open)
4) A menu item for showing Hidden Files (I've almost gotten the Terminal command memorized, but it'd be easier if I could just hit a menu item)

There are probably more, but those are the main ones that I would find fairly useful.

1: What is a drag box?
2: The spinning up thing is (I think) because you have OS X set to put hard drives to sleep when possible
3: The tabs had better be optional
4: That would be nice

Thats like asking why you want to use firefox vs some old version of IE. Could you really go back to non tabbed browsing.

Pathfinder has some nicer preview features that i use often, has built in terminal built in extractor. Dual pane view. Info that doesnt show in finder.

Finder sucks.

Going back to non-tab browsing does suck (I do it daily at work... stupid IE6), but I don't want tabs on my Finder, or my Terminal, or my Text Editor. I want to be able to put windows side by side to compare them or drag files between them. The only thing that tends to 'bundle' all my web tabs together is that they are all on Safari.

Tried it but couldn't copy one file from one folder to another. Removed from system, not a bad concept but it's just not for me to use or learn to use.

Can it handle invisible files well? I often copying files to memory cards for use in other systems that do not get along well with the invisible files.

1. In PathFinder, there's a small little box that you can drag files to and it will hold them and then you can navigate else where on your file system and pull the files from that box and put them where you want them.
2. Nope, I have this turned off and they still go to sleep and they take 5-10 sec to spin up whenever I go into any Finder window with an external drive connected. Really obnoxious...
3. Yea, I think it should be optional.. similar to how Safari works if you don't initiate tabs. There there, but you don't really notice them.

1: Ah, well, my existing 'workflow' is to just move things one at a time, opening new Finder locations as I need them.

2: I don't usually have externals connected, so I do not have much experience there

3: I agree, optional is best.

I have tried Pathfinder in the past, but it always felt a little... busy? I just don't use my Mac for heavy duty stuff anymore, not since school, so I just don't need a whole lot of stuff to keep my Mac experience happy.

Yea, the past few months, I've tried to scale back everything that I use on my Mac. It was just getting really sluggish and I had tons of processes running all the time. Pathfinder was a huge chunk of that memory footprint, so I got rid of it. Found a few small utilities that have helped my finder experience, and so far I'm not really unhappy with it. There are things it could do better, but overall.. I'm pleased.

I hear this alot so I'm just curious...

What's broken in 10.6 and FCP? I've been using FCS3 and 10.6 for about 8 months now or so and haven't had any real problems out of it. Though I do just use FCP and not Motion, Color, etc...
