Question New extreme build based on AMD Threadripper 3970x CPU, for bragging rights and some virtualization.

Hi to all of you!

(This is going to be quick as I'm leaving somewhere)

First of all, I just would like to say that I'm not really in need for a new box. I'm just an enthusiastic and practicing a hobby let's say. I'm looking for some benchmark numbers and I like to brag about my rig. My current main machine is the one you see in my sig. It is doing well of course except for maybe when I run several VMs (10 or so). I have been using it for about 4 years so it is about the right time to upgrade. I have been enjoying how AMD humiliated Intel with core counts and multi-threaded performance. The threadripper line is just very tempting.

I kinda of do everything with my computer but it is mostly used for heavy browsing, youtube, compressing files, encoding videos. The other main thing I do is virtualization. I tend to run about 10 virtual machines with Vmware or virtualbox. It is a pen-testing lab. Currently, I give each VM 4GB of RAM, two processors, and two cores per processor as per Vmware terminology. They become slow and unresponsive when I switch between them specially if they are windows machines. I need to give them more processor power and 8GB of RAM at least. That will be 80 gigs of RAM in total. This is why I'm planning to get 128GB of RAM for my new rig. The 3970x will be more than enough of course with all its 32 cores! The reason I don't want to go for the 3990x is because it doesn't scale well. You start paying more money for less performance, plus it is hard to fully utilize 64 cores.

Here is a preliminary list from pcpartpicker:

My current questions:

1- I'm a watercooling guy, but I read somehere (I think it was tomshardware) that for the 3970x cooling performance doesn't really benefit overclocking when using open loop versus closed AIO coolers. It is fun setting up open loop watercooling but why do it if AIO coolers give almost identical performance?

2- I want to overclock the beast of course, but do I really need an 800 bucks mobo for this? Will 500 bucks mobos do?

3- I picked

but I have no idea how appropriate is that. I heard Threadrippers are really picky when it comes to RAM, so I need to check the QVL. Given that speed is the objective, what would be the best ram for this cpu? The ASUS page isn't loading. I want the fastest ram available.

4- For the video card, it sounds like the 3090 isn't really available . I will need to wait for some time.

5- What case do you guys recommend if I want to show off my watercooling setup with RGB lights? This needs to be Full tower.

Please ask if you have questions. I'll come back later with more info.

This is to answer the sticky questions:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Already answered

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

I can go as much as 6000 bucks.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Mainly the US. But that doesn't mean I can't buy from other countries.

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.

No need to find deals for me. I'm more interested in correct parts selection.

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

I'm a speed fanboy!

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I may use the monitor in my sig.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Overclocking of course.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?

Well, the monitor in my sig is 3440 x 1440 . But I might get a 4k monitor.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.

In few weeks

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?

Not really

Hmmmm !

Are they going to have HEDT cpus (Threadrippers)?

I don't think the TRs are part of Nov 5th announcement, but surely it will impact market pricing of all AMD processors. It's a week away.

I would get an Epyc workstation for vm duty.

Something like this with a 7702P

I will look onto that and compare. Does it have to be rack-mounted? Because I don't think that will suit me. I prefer a full tower pc.

Anybody here with an overclocked TR 3970x ? I want to know how good you guys did. And do you really need to be careful with RAM selection?

You should look at my FS thread. Will save you a ton on a good motherboard, monoblock and 3970X. I can post the link, but not sure that's allowed.

I actually saw it by coincidence. I'm considering it except that some people are recommending me the new ryzen 9 5950x which favors gaming. I'm undecided.
