New External Drive on USB. Do I FDisk it?

My OS is Windows 2000 Pro

I have gotten a 250GB hard drive to use for backups. I now have it in external cabinet and connected by via USB 2.0.

What do I have to do to make it a usable disk?

Do I Fdisk it? Partition it?

As always, many thanks in advance for the clear, thoughtful replies.

my little 10GB I just formatted it and I was off.
Unsure if F disk can partion a USB DRIVE but it might be able too.

First thing to do is to partition the drive. Use the partition manager found here:
control panel-> administrative tools->computer management->disk management

Select your drive (it will appear as something like 'disk1' or 'disk2') and choose 'Create volume' from the menu.
Select 'simple volume' (assuming that you don't want RAID), and follow the steps which will take you through choosing a drive letter and size of the partition. You will then be given the option to format your partition. Select the most appropriate option (usually NTFS).

That's it.
