Hope its the right spot to post this info. Its not really new (as the format start to create in 1999), but the EVD player start to surface in China and the standard was about to set.
I first see it here at the inquirer
and do some looking around with google
from a China gov "support" newspaper site:
EVD standard.
from TW (i think) LSI Logic site:
LSI develop chip for EVD format
i personally don't know much about it. and its going against "Blue Ray" technology. I guess its a way China gov do things (make own so it will not depend on "foreign technology patent" and their fees). The price of the EVD-player has to go down to DVD-player level to be sucessful. and the software (movie) has to be plenty. The claim about "Players powered by EVD technology are expected to offer as much as five times the quality of image definition compared with DVD players " will be amazing if true (given DVD movie are actually good enough for me 🙂)
It might success in China and the surround area (like SVCD), but i doubt we will ever see it here in US.
