Good lord people... you can explain Mulholland Falls and Donnie Darko but you can't follow this episode? Though, if you were switching back and forth between ER and basketball, then it's understandable.

Like someone posted, they were just showing the day shift and the night shift at the same time. The first few times they switched shifts, they showed what time it was. Carter and Pratt treated some of the same patients.

For example, when they kept switching back and forth between that drown victim and her father. During the night shift, Pratt managed to do something to saver her. Then, sometime during the day, something happens and Carter couldn't save her.

Pratt had a good day in the ER, which made him want to stay. Carter's day sucked, and made him want to leave.

edit: Yes, Ming-Na is looking hotter than ever. 😀

I hate how they advertise for E.R. that every episode is a "must see, can't miss, shocking, outrageous, intense, unbelievable, heart-pounding" episode.

It's a great show otherwise though, but I don't watch it

I didn't catch the very beginning with the asian woman cancer patient... but caught parts of her appearances so it may contribute to my confusion.

Anyway, what I had thought to have been going on was what happened to both docs, not an ALTERNATE occurance, but what happened earlier that day (Carter) and what subsequently happened when Pratt came in.

I thought Carter was treating the little black kid (Curtis' brother).. then he got away, then at night, he was brought back in because of some more gang-related stuff and Pratt treated him again. With the father watching his daughter (drowning victim I guess), I thought Carter gave him bad news initially, but then she made a turn for the better at night and that's when Pratt came in to tell dad the good news. What seemed to solidify this theory for me was when the heart attack dad was shown to be dead (family staying in trauma room after his death)... then they showed scenes where Carter (in the morning) had worked on him. Even when Mr. Magoo's was on fire, Pratt and the night-shift were already working on a large fire. When they showed Carter in the daytime as the last scene, the place had only JUST caught fire (smaller flames).

What blew this theory out of the water was when 2 opposite things happened, brain fart... can't recall what that was at the moment, but it was the latter half of the show... and I became extremely confused like many of you.

Carter needs to wake up and realize Abby is for him. Can't he see that because of her devotion to family, that she would be a good wife?

I was saying to my fiance at that last scene where he walks away from her... "and to think he was about to propose that night..."

Carter is a dumbass. He's got a FINE piece of ass to tap, yet he decides to go to Africa to be "buddy buddy" with Luka. Maybe he'll tap some African ass over there..."Once you go black....😛"

That being said, next year is Noah Wyle's last year anyway 🙁

The episode was very confusing, I'm even more confused now after reading this thread.

I did think the eclipse (or whatever) was cool and just before the old Asian woman died they started that chanting, that was cool.

Carter was supposed to be the next Dr. Green. A strong solid leader in times of crisis. Now it looks like he can't handle it.

Scenarios for next season

Maybe he needs to build the hospital a new wing and donate some good ER Equipment and get himself a position on the board. Go spend some of Grandma's money on worthy causes.

Carter and Abby move into Grandma's house, use her money to help inner city youth by setting up a not for profit private practice funded by the Carter Family Foundation.

Romano becomes a teacher, and because of the loss of his arm, becomes a little more humble and developes a decent personality. He realizes that he can still save lives by passing on his skills and knowledge to elite students.

Carrie Weaver is investigated in the death of the councilman's boyfriend. Family brings up possibility of Medical Malpractice suit.

Pratt and Ming-Na become more involved, Pratt talks to friends about asking her to marry him.

Doc Magoos is rebuilt.

Or, he could become the meanest hardarse, come down on students and tell them if they want to pass, they have perform "favors" for him, all the girls get "extra special" attention. An investigation developes, he finds out that the hospital is about to fire him, so he goes to the top of the hospital and just as he is about to throw himself off the top of the building, the police show up with an arrest warrant for rape. When the police show up in the ER, the let Carter know and as they walk out of the ambulance entrance, Romano lands head first in front of them. ER staff tries to save him, but they can't.

Commercial break

Carter returns from the Congo, as he walks into the ER, Abby is there. They talk for a moment, and agree to a dinner date to talk.

Just as Carter smiles, Benton comes rushing in with a victim of a random shooting. He rode in on the ambulance. As he tries to help, Carter reminds him that he is no longer a Dr. there, and has to be escorted out of the trauma room.
Weaver comes down and sees Benton, tells him they have openings for Head Surgeon, and that she wants to extend the job to Benton first. He takes it there on the spot, grabs a coat and scrubs, and goes into help Carter.

Why?

It was easy to follow. Everytime they showed Carter, it was the day shift of that day. Everytime they showed Pratt, it was later, during the night shift of that day. Carter's day ended as Pratt's started.

How hard is that?

I like Pratt's character, and am glad he's staying. I also like the med student, Galant. I like how he's the fresh out of school, want to make a difference in everyone's life, kind of guy at this point. not yet aware of the realities of working in a county-funded hospital ER. Pratt is a good mix of a seasoned County General doc and Galant. He does everything he can, but at the same time knows the reality of where he works and how everything goes down.

Ming-Na is just fricken bomb. Her character is pretty lame, and is really just the eye candy of the show.

Carrie is a retard. Nuff said.

Abby is hot, and as dedicated to her family as she is, I don't blame Carter for not wanting that baggage. Who's to say that if/when they had their own family, that her mother/brother wouldn't still come first??? Ask Tom Leykis about chicks with baggage.....

Carter should have been made head of the ER. He knows how it is and knows his shyt, and can go around running the place without being a total prick. Don't know what's going to happen to him though, as it seems he's at the end of his rope.

Romano....as big of a prick as he is, it'll be ghey if he "softens up" on the show just because he lost his arm. Obviously, yes, he has been humbled by the whole thing. But it just wouldn't be the same if all of a sudden he started treating everyone with respect. If anything, I think he'll start to be a nicer guy, but then when Elizabeth rejects him, he pretty much resorts to total ass status.

And yes, the episode was hard to follow till about 45 minutes through. Was kind of like Pulp Fiction where you're watching the parts and saying to yourself, "WTF is going on?" then one scene that starts to tie it together makes you go, "oooohhhhhhh. I get it." It was a good episode, and I see the effect they were going for, but as a 200th episode, it didn't make it stand out all that much from other episodes.

It was neat however to look at the different perspectives of the two doctors. For those that remember, Carter used to be how Pratt is now. I think they're just showing the evolution of his character to "help" with his leaving after next season. Between the drug addiction, parents divorce/cheating, grandma dying, and his relationship with Abby, he has obviouisly changed a ton since he first showed up.

Carter IS who he is today as a doctor because of Benton being such an ass to him. If Benton hadn't been so hard on Carter, he would have ended up as a weak doctor. I can remember day one when he was a snot-nosed pansy. Now he's hardcore.

I'm not a man to shed tears, but I had tears in my eyes during the episode where Carter was flying down to drug rehab, and the camera pans over to show Benton sitting beside him...POWERFUL stuff.

Don't forget having a drunk person fall into his grandmothers grave. 😀

I missed this episode actually, I'm a bit upset. Now I've gotta run to kazaa or bit torrent to find it.
