I just built a new computer:
epox 9npa+ motherboard
amd 3000 venice
evga 6600gt video card
wester digital hard drive
toshiba dvd burner

my father had a copy Windows XP Professional Version 2002 that he never opened, so I used that. The install went smooth. But the computer wont connect to the internet. It tried to create a connection when I opened ie, seemed to set up correctly, but no connection. I have a cable modem. plugged the cable into my laptop and it worked fine, wont work on the epox.

Looked in device manager. I dont see anything even remotely resembling the gigabit lan thing. What would that be listed as?

In control panel I see one network connection, a "139four Connection" (the four key on my keyboard does not work). Properties on it show that it is Enabled and connected for 35 minutes now (to what, I dont know). But the sent and recieved packets are 0. The ipaddress, subnet mask, etc are all<unavailable>

i dont know if windows sees my hardware correctly since it is a new motherboard, but XP from 2002. Worst thing to be broken is your internet connection. I cant upgrade any windows service packs.

Please help! Thanks in advance...

Judy

Windows isn't seeing your comptuer's ethernet port. If it was seeing it, it'd be listed under "network adapters" in the device manager. DO you have any devices in there with big question marks as their icons? 1394 is firewire.

To get it working, you probably just need the proper drivers. If you have the CD for yoru motherboard, it should have the proper drivers. Otherwise, you can get them off the Epox site.

You need to install the motherboard drivers before you can connect to the internet. I don't think Windows even detected the hardware for the motherboard's ethernet port before I installed the drivers. I actually downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia rather than use the CD-ROM that came with the motherboard (of course, you'll need a computer with an internet connection, so that may be a catch-22).

the install cd autorun thing shows 3 things to install.
1) nVidia nForce driver 6.37 (install windows xp sp1 first!)
2) ac97 audio driver 3.68
3) usb 2.0 driver (readme file directing you to microsofts site)

I ran the first 2 even without the service pack, since i cant get it.

didnt work.

then I checked the cd through explorer.
the driver directory had more stuff:
1) chipset
2) floppy
3) graphic
four) realtec audio
5) realtec lan
6) usb2.0

#1, #four, #6 correspond with the above 3 things. the video i didnt install, I used the evga 6600 gt CD. So I installed the realtec lan thing.

after install, reboot, i still dont see any ethernet devices. control panel add/remove programs shows 3 things: the nvidia drivers, realtek ac97 audio, and realtek rtl8139/810x fast ethernet nic driver setup.

but no hardware.

only thing with a yellow exclamation point in the device manager is the usb 2.0.

so I went to add/remove hardware added a network adapter, pointed to the epox cd drivers. After reboot, the adapter showed up in device manager, but had a yellow exclamation. The device status says "this device cannot start (code 10)". troubleshooter was useless.

Any ideas?

If you can get on the internet somewhere, try downloading the newest drivers.

If that can't happen, go into the device manager and remove (uninstall) the network adapter. Then reboot, it might fix itself.

I borrowed a friends cable modem that lets you connect usb or ethernet. Now I got to windows update and updated everything, now on sp2. that did not fix it. I deleted the adapter I had added previously. Tried the CD drivers again, that didnt work. Also tried the nvidia drivers from the nvidia website. Device manager has absolutely no clue that there is a ethernet card. Maybe I'll try formatting my hard drive and trying again. Any ideas? Could it be a board problem?

Also, make sure you have Nvidia LAN enabled in BIOS. Go to the Onboard Device menu in BIOS and:

(1) Set 'NV Lan' to AUTO
(2) Set 'NV Lan MAC Address' to DISABLED

Also, if you installed the drivers before updating Windows XP to SP2, you should uninstall the drivers, reboot, and reinstall.

I am betting this is it, had the same problem after a bios update as for some reason it disabled this...

Ummm, I dont have the NV Lan thingy in my BIOS.

I have:
nVidia LAN Control
nVidia LAN MAC Addr

My BIOS is I think 6.00PG, I have never upgraded my BIOS. Only upgraded windows xp sp2, and all nvidia drivers. Could this be the problem? What BIOS version would be my best/safest choice? I just downloaded them.

Thanks again,
Judy

Default bios should work fine, and the bios options you listed are the same as the ones he did.

nVidia LAN Control = NV Lan
nVidia LAN MAC Addr = NV Lan MAC Address

I suggest to download a program called drivers cleaner. You can google it. With it, follow the instruction and remove all trace of nvidia chipset drivers. Reboot then let windows to finish booting. This might fix your USB2.0 problem and clean any drivers problems for the LAN. In device manager, check foe the yellom mark for USB. If it is still there, right click on it and update drivers. let windows to try to install the right drivers.

Check if the LAN adapter is identified in the device manager. If everything is setted right in BIOS, it should. Then, install chipset drivers. Reboot and let windows install the new material. If everything is right, then you should have everything woking.

This board use the nvidia ethernet controller. Not the realtek. Forcing the realtek drivers to this device may cause the problem you have with the controller. I forgot to tell you to remove the realtek LAN driver too when you'll clean the chipset drivers. Install only the nvidia ethernet driver, from the nvidia chipset driver kit.
