New employee "initiation"...

Do you guys have a ritual for "initiating" new people into your work group/company?

After they've been here for a couple weeks we slowly inform them that new employees get a free helicoptor ride after their 3 month probation period ends. They do test flights often around the campus so it's not out of the realm of believability.

What about everyone else?

Test their honesty by dropping a $5 near the register when they're the only person around it and then do an audit for the register if the person didn't mention it. My boss used to do this to everyone. About half failed and did end up being a bad employee.

I agree with that, but I also wouldn't count being led on that you were going to get a helicopter ride as either bullying or hazing in normal circumstances.

We joke about playing "circuit roulette" at my work, but it's really more of a reminder to carry your pen tester and assume all circuits are live. Nobody actually shocks anyone on purpose.

None. The only "workplace initiation" I've ever seen was when I first went to work for the local electrical utility, a couple of the crew tried to convince me that I had to go see the General Manager to get my "free turkey coupon" at Thanksgiving.

I didn't fall for that one.


Silly fucking children playing games at work... If pranksters would put that extra work into...<gasp> actually doing the work they get paid for, they MIGHT be more productive.

They have also tried the turkey one here once in a while but it's been a while.

Well, we were looking at bringing a guy on, until I had him climb 80ft up a ladder to see the job he would be performing. Seems he was a little more nervous of heights than he originally claimed... Other then that, just passing the shit work along.

During my retail days, we would have new employees look for the gondola stretcher or left-handed wrenches. In my first professional job (auditor), there was a guy who had to take inventory of the cars in the parking garage. He had to monitor the traffic going in and out and sketch how the cars were parked on the different levels.
