New Email Client?

Looking for a new email client that will do the following:

- Allow columns to be different in In Box and Sent Box(s), OE 6 wants them to be the same
- No file compression message when I close
- Spell checker like Firefox, red underline
- Customizable compose window: add/delete tools etc.
- User interface like OE6 so I don't have to relearn everything
- Will read my OE folders so I can search old emails

Does Thunderbird meet my wants? Another?

thanks

I think that'll pretty much kill it, AFAIK no other mail client can natively use OE's files.

Which is a good reason to switch to something open sourced. It'll be a PITA now, but it'll free up your future in case you want to switch. I switched to Thunderbird due to this exact scenario. It took awhile, but I got my old mail backed up, and now I'm not tied down to a proprietary(non modifiable) format.

I suppose I could keep OE resident for old emails, will Thunderbird or something else do these?

I don't require much of an email client, so I don't have answers to most of your questions. Your best bet would be to try it, and have it set to leave the messages on the server. That way you can see how it works, and won't be tied to it. Here are the answers I do have...

I don't believe it compresses files on close. If it does, it's transparent.
It does spell checking
You can customize buttons, and there's addons to add more buttons.
I've never used OE, but I found the Tbird interface very intuitive. It's pretty straight forward, and you shouldn't have problems.

Or you could start using an IMAP server (like gmail) so that you can switch clients as much as you want without worrying about the local storage format.

Most of the bigger-named email clients have wizards for importing OE mail folders. Do they not work, or are you guys talking about something else?

I didn't think they imported mail folders, only contacts. If they do, then there's no problem. I've never used OE, so I don't know what's available to import/export.
