New edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' has the N-word censored

What is a word worth? According to Publishers Weekly, NewSouth Books' upcoming edition of Mark Twain's seminal novel "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" will remove all instances of the N-word -- I'll give you a hint, it's not nonesuch -- present in the text and replace it with slave. The new book will also remove usage of the word beloved patriot. The effort is spearheaded by Twain expert Alan Gribben, who says his PC-ified version is not an attempt to neuter the classic but rather to update it.
"Race matters in these books," Gribben told PW. "It's a matter of how you express that in the 21st century."

The book wasn't written in the 21st century. I see no reason why it should be "updated" to 21st century political correctness. The fact that it wasn't written in the 21st century is the very reason it shouldn't be changed. It gives a great deal of insight into the social norms of the time.

It gives me a creepy history editing "1984" vibe.

"We didn't just start thinking this way, we've always thought this way".

"Oceania didn't just go to war with East Asia, Oceania has always been at war with East Asia".

Anyone else have sudden flashbacks of those scenes from Thank You For Smoking, at the end where the old movies are edited to remove smoking?

Fucking weird, man.

The book is meant to represent a period in time, it should not and cannot be updated. That nullifies the entire point.

It's meant to give you a glimpse into that time in history.

This is like Germany not teaching about the Nazis. You have to teach the shameful parts of history as well, not just the bright and cheery stuff.

No shit. Which is why when you remove the controversies and contexts from history, you also remove the lessons to be learned.

As long as they're not going around destroying copies of the original, they can do what they want. Really stupid idea though.

i think this is bullshit. it's an offensive word, but it's absolutely necessary to leave it in the book. it proves a point and it forces us to remember a shitty part of american history. mark twain would never let this happen if he was still alive.

"*n!gger jim" ftw

History Revisionism is a horrible thing. I'd have been less offended by this kind of horseshit had they just had the balls to go out and burn the books instead of removing and changing the content of them.

Remember when some Muslims said it was blasphemy to draw Muhammad then like 2 minutes later the internet is flooded with drawings of Muhammad?

Yeah I don't see how this could backfire.

this reminds me of when the texas board of education voted to rewrite history in their public school history textbooks

This is a terrible, terrible idea.

My thoughts, exactly

fucking naggers ruining all our good books!

D:

It's puzzling why this is even an issue. Black people should not be offended by this book since black people can't read books 😛

edit
see how much racism happens when people try to stop racism? it's draw muhammad day all over again
