The usual, suspended account so they need user name and password. My parents got hit by this one. It installs Spyware on your computer that redirects IE to a NetOptimizer site randomly. SpyBot and AdAware cleaned up all the tidbits it installed.

I got one the other day from "Squaretrade" saying that I or someone else was making fraudulent bids on my account, and to please go to "THIS SITE" and type in my info.

Contacted Squaretrade, and as I thought, scam.

Do these scams only aim for American ebayers or they go for users of the German/whatever ebay, too?

There are ones tailored for different companies. Same with bank phishing scams.

but, seriously, theres another one of these every week. Do we still need all the warning threads? Surely the only answer is a 3" by 5" warning on the frontpage of AOL....

uhh, I think they better have audio warnings....a majority of AOL customers can't read

Actually - thinking about it - there's no reason for AOLers to actually go on the internet at all.
AOL could fill up that wasted cd-rom with a mock-up internet - with a few sites on britney spears, some on baking cookies, a bit of porn, and a cache of MSN entertainment. Add a bot for the users to chat to on AIM, and they'd never notice the difference. Everybody'd be happy.

That is the most amazing idea I have ever seen on the entire anandtech forums.

Infact, I think you should win the nobel prize for such a fascinating idea.

Top Job Chap

I get stuff like this a lot....either fake emails from squaretrade, eBay, or paypal. These eBay scammers always try to get my information. I literally get at least 20 a month.

I just got this email. Has a User ID and Password form on the email. Very professional looking!

Hell, I even thought twice about putting in my info.

I can understand how a person not as savvy with the computer and internet could get caught on this.
