OK, bought a white box drive, the NEC ND-1100A.
I need burning software, etc.

I would like to pick up DVD X Copy and DVD2one, but alltogether with media that's pretty expensive.
Burnworld.com is offering Xcopy ver.1.5 for $80 after rebate and they say you'll get a free "Platinum" upgrade... wondering if that's true. The site has NO resellerrating, so I'm a bit concerned.
Someone suggested DVD Shrink as a freeware alternative to DVD2one, has anyone used it?

Just wanting to get everything ordered before the drive arrives. If anyone has had experience witht the drive (outside of a Dell machine not being able to use RW's) let me know

Any suggestions for DVD recording or manipulation software would be appreciated[L=Burnworld.com] as a freeware alternative to DVD2one, has anyone used it?

DVDshrink is good but it isn't hasn't matured yet. It has a TON of features that dvd2one can't touch. I personally do not use DVDshrink to compress dvds. I simply use it to strip out unwanted audio and subtitles from the movie.

No one can deny that Instantcopy has the best quality transcoder. It is MUCH better than DVD2one or DVD95copy. The problem is that instantcopy currently has a lot of bugs that aren't being fixed quickly.

There is NO reason to buy DVDxCopy. There is a freeware application called DVDtoolbox that will split a dvd so it can be burned on to 2 dvd+r medias. Here is a link to it
http://www.dvdtoolbox.de/index_en.htm

Here is my suggestion:

Get Pinnacle InstantCopy because it simply has the best transcoding engine for quality. You will have to work around the bugs. Everything else that you need is freeware. DVDxCOPY is pretty much useless in my opinion since DVDToolbox does the samething for free.

My second choice for picking one application is DVD95Copy. It is almost as fast as DVD2One and is the same quality as DVD2one but it has a lot of features that DVD2One doesn't. DVD95Copy can individually compress each part of a dvd differently. With DVD95Copy you can HIGHLY compress the menus and extras so that you don't compress the actual movie as much. DVD2One can't do this yet. You can also do movie only copies with DVD95Copy just like DVD2One.

The biggest advantage of DVD2One is the speed. Personally I am willing to wait a 2 hours for a quality copy compared to 20 minutes for an inferior version.

This is a lot of digest but I suggest that you also head over to

There is a TON of information on all the dvd software out there.

EDIT: As for recording software I would go with CopyToDVD or RecordNow Max. That is what most people feel produce the most compatible burns.
