New DVD player, purchase now or wait?

Well as I gradually upgrade my setup I've been thinking of upgrading my DVD player. I currently have a Samsung M-101 DVD player and while its well suited to my needs and is functioning just fine I've thought of getting a newer/better player a couple of times. Admittedly this is because I want to hook up my Sharp CD/Minidisc deck via the optical output that it has to my receiver but my DVD player and XBox occupy the two optical inputs on the back and I hate hooking something up permanently to the front digital inputs which I prefer to use for things that are temporary like my portable minidisc player/recorder. That and I've also occasionally thought of getting a DVD changer instead of loading single discs. I've also thought of it for things like SACD or HDCD but neither of those formats really seem to be taking off nor does DVD audio although I could be wrong.

Do you folks think it would be worth it and I would see an improvement from my current Samsung even on just a standard CRT like my Samsung TXN2726 TV set? Should I just wait and save towards speakers and upgrade my TV set as well at a later time or would I see some change in picture quality now?

On a TV that size you may not notice a difference. I would wait until the universal players come down some more and hopefully can all pass a digital signal to the receiver. If you're lacking good speakers, I would say go that route for now. If your receiver is really old (and doesn't support PL2 or DTS) you may want to consider upgrading that first.
