New DVD/CD Drive not working properly (NEC 3520A)

I just purchased a new NEC 3520A DVD/CD drive and just can't seem to get it to work properly (the reviews for this drive are excellent). I am running Win XP with 2 HDD?s (on the same cable) and 2 CD drives (on the same cable). I tried all possible configurations for making the new drive a master/slave etc. The drive it replaced (Pioneer DVR-105) and the other drive I am still using work fine. The problems are as follows:

1) New CD (movie) plays for between a few seconds and a few minutes and then stalls, requiring me to exit Power DVD 5.

2) I can't get it to work with DVD X Copy Platinum.

It seems as if some movies work and other don't in new NEC drive. Could the drive be defective? How can I find out? Do you think re-installing Power DVD and DVD X Copy would help?

Thank you!

It shouldn't need a firmware update but it can't hurt. Have you tried putting it on an IDE channel all by itself?

Did you make sure DMA was set for the drive/bus?
