I just got a new compaq pIII 733, and it comes with dsl service. The TIadsl download monitor tells me that i cant get more than 384kbps downstream, and 128 upstream. My friends down the block (who also get dsl through swbell, but not also through prodigy like i do) get nearly 5 times what i get. Can anyone tell me why this might be?

DSL comes in many flavors, and unfortunately your service isn't the fastest of them. YOur cap speed is set according to your provider and the subscription you sign up for. THere is not one set speed for DSL. Also you may have the weaker DSL service that they extend to people over 18000 feet from your nearest telco station.

There is nothing you can do besides pay for a better speed. There is no way to uncap the dsl speed limit. Unlike cable.

Yeah my Telocity tells me the same thing--384k. My roommate just got the same Telocity installed around the same time I did at his gf's place down the street and he gets around 1000k..... maybe it's just my line.... sometimes you can call them up and yell and they might do something to increase your speed--my buddy across the street did that with his pacbell, and it's a little faster now. Hope that helps--good luck!

I have Prodigy/SBC adsl. My actual speed varies a great deal. I am very close to the CO and my line tests at 1.54 m/sec. I typically connect in the 1,2xx k/sec range. Prodigy has worthless service and tech support. This is not just personal opinion. Recently a magazine published a review of ISP's and Prodigy was the worst. I can attest to the fact that their tech support is competely worthless. I have spent literally hundreds of hours trying to get them to correct a sync loss problem. No avail after months. I have talked to Pacbell, Bell South and several other tech support groups at the advice of Prodigy. I complained often enough and to the CEO as well that they offered to allow me to cancel the service without the termination penalty being applied. Don't know if they value my "profile" enough to warrant a substantial penalty for termination or if they knew in advance the service would be so horrid and use the penalty to place a hold on potential quitters. Even had one Prodigy tech tell me the ONLY way to cure the problem was to change providers.
