New DS Lite coming

There's been much confusion, particularly in my head, since this weekend when Japanese business newspaper Nikkei reported with seeming unfaltering certainty that a new DS was coming from Nintendo. Even internanational wire service Reuters picked the story up.

Then early this morning Nintendo of Japan responded with a glorified no comment, saying in part that they are "always developing new products."

Now, responding to a request for comment from Kotaku, Nintendo of America weighs in with a slightly chunkier no comment, pointing out that Nikkei did not talk to Nintendo for their story. Interesting:

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo. While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story."

What's strange is that the original story (I had Ash check) never quotes any sources or in anyway indicates that the story is essentially rumor. The newspaper essentially reports it as fact. So I'm not sure what to make of this.

Wouldn't be the first time a company said no comment over a new hardware story but the Nikkei newspaper doesn't even list a source of any kind.

We'll find something out on Wednesday potentially. Link

If there?s truth to the Nikkei report, we?ll likely know on Wednesday, when Nintendo president Satoru Iwata delivers the company?s annual fall presentation. Last year, the event included the blockbuster announcement that the next console sequel to Japan?s hottest franchise, ?Monster Hunter,? is coming to the Wii.

This isn't going to replace phones that have cameras and MP3 players built in, because people aren't gonna stop carrying their cell phones now that their DS can play music and take pictures... I'd be interested in hearing what these "advanced wireless communication functions" are though.

Regardless, it's something new from Nintendo, so you know people are gonna snap it up.

I don't use the wireless, don't need (yet another) camera, and mine already plays MP3s, video, etc.
No thanks, especially for more $$.
I'd like to see if this is even true...

I don't think the camera is supposed to replace the camera phones. It may be something more akin to the EyeToy if the rumors are true.

it it comes with a decent web browser, SD Card Slot, Organizer, Camera, MP3 Player, Movie Player, as well as backward compatability with the DS library, I might just pick this one up. Hopefully the processor will be fast enough to handle youtube.

*waits for confirmation before putting his ds lite up on Craigslist*

I would think the advanced wireless communication functions were support for more kinds of wireless encryption.

lol 2 cameras? 12% thinner is a bit interesting, I actually find the DS Lite to be a bit uncomfortable due to the fact that it's already so thin, I prefer the feel of the fat DS, and I have very small hands. Looking forward to seeing how the DSi shop pans out, digital distribution for the DS + SD slot = no more need for cartridges?

If there is enough internal storage it might allow making bigger games, i.e Disgaea not needing to cut away half of the voice acting. They could make the standard version on cart and either make the missing content a downloadable supplement or only in the downloable version.

Boo-urns to raising the price though, DS Lite's tech is so old now they could probably still make a fair profit selling the new version at $130.

Goddamnit! The speculations are right on about the new DS!

Pros
* 3MP camera
* Built in memory with SD card expansion
* DS ware for the DS akin with Wiiware for the Wii
* Double the fun! Double the touch screens
* Larger screens
* A bit more compact
* Better WiFi
* White AND Black upon release
* Music Playback, Photo Editing Playing tools, maybe video playback?
* Built in browser?
* Quite possibly another step in getting close to that all in one electronic device?

Cons
* I guess that ends peripherals taking advantage of the Slot 2... Goodbye Rumble pak, goodbye Guitar Hero On Tour, Tilt cartriage functions? And worse of all.... DS is going the way of Gameboy Advance Micro??!!!! (DS only games, no backwards dances with GBA)
* More expensive than the first introduction price of the DS and DS lites...
The fact that my DS lite is just 2 years old.... for some, even less. Now I have to fight myself from getting yet another handheld?!
* Another Handheld amongst a growing collection of electronics I have.
* Did I mention no more Slot 2 already?

I am excited and saddened at the same time about this...

Since there would be DS ware... I sure as hell hope that the DSi would stay region free like its good predecessor is. (crosses fingers)

Otherwise, fat chance in hell that another Elite Beat Agents thing will be pulled off again.... No more imports to show how much gamers want a particular game.

Not bad, I'm almost willing to pick one up just for the Wi-Fi browser. I'm not worried about losing the Slot-2 since I never use mine anyway. Just need to find something to do with my DS Lite.

Looks hot, the DS really has gone miles since its first incarnation...

Even though this isn't too different from the DS Lite, I still think its a pretty significant improvement. The slightly better/bigger screens are certainly welcome, however I'm still wanting to see them fill up the entire upper half with one awesomely awesome wide screen...perhaps once OLEDs become common place...

I just hope they don't neuter the SD card expansion like they did with the Wii, although I'd wager hacks will take care of any inconveniences.

The dual cameras might sound ridiculous, but it does kind of make sense. One is obvious for taking pictures, the other one (the one on the hinge) seems to be meant for web cam or game integration use.

No GBA slot, same hardware, same shovelware problems. Lame.

Seems to me that they're starting to get out of their market a bit. I think I'd spend the extra $40 and get an 8GB iTouch. A more open platform with more potential (and ease of integration into everything else). Gaming hasn't advanced too far, but then it practically just got started and is already advancing quickly. There's nothing here that would convince me to go with a DS, and in fact, it'd push me to consider other devices more. I'm going to guess the internal storage to be 256MB, Nintendo won't want to upstage the Wii with their portable.

Also, Nintendo announced their storage solution for the Wii. Its SD cards. So it'll only be about 2.5 years for them to implement something that could have (and in my opinion should have) been implemented at launch. Still limited to 2GB and won't be ready until next spring.

There's the Billion Yen question. Flashcards exist because the DS cart encryption system is completely and utterly broken. It's simply not possible to differentiate legit games from flash carts just based on that. Blocking them would need to entail blocking based on the cart's identifier (easy to change, for most carts at least) or purposely changing the operation of the DS in such a way that only flash carts break (such as doing something to exploit the long amount of time it takes to read random data off of such a cart). It's possible that Nintendo could plug the hole here, but it seems very unlikely. A realistic best case scenario here would be that current cards stop working, future cards work around this.

The encryption system was their primary defense; with it being broken their options are severely limited.

Well, I'll be buying one. My current DS lite is looking long in the tooth thanks to Cooking Mama and an overly competitive wife. :)

So the question now is, when does this come to regions outside of Japan?

The iTouch and iPhone are terrible gaming platforms. I have one, its useless for anything but the most casual of casual games. Buttons are not overrated, and neither is a stylus. Sure, you can *run* quake on one (jailbroken), but actually trying to play it is a total disaster. Even a simple game of tetris is an exercise in frustration.

If you buy one with the primary intent of gaming, you better hold on to your receipts and read that return policy very closely.
