new drivers on old ones

i was reading in one of the threads and someone was talking about vid card problems possible because they just installed the new drivers over old ones. Whats the prob with this? how could i tell if i did this?(i think i didnt) , and what bad things happen?
 
It's not usually a problem, but if there are fixes for problems with the older ones, that could cause issues when upgrading to new ones.

To be safe, it's usually best to run Driver Cleaner first, which is a few seconds time anyway.
