New drivers now HDTV set up is screwed up

I really think the drivers for HDTV output it in the format of 720P or 1080I and not custom regular output like the older drivers cause I could have a 1366 by 768 on my 32inch LCD via DVI to HDMI and it loked stunning from my 6800GT using some older 93.- drivers. The new drivers are crap and make u stick with a HD output formats and screws it up even when changing resolutions cause it still wants to send 720P or 1080I. How can I fix this without reverting back to the old drivers cause I have a new graphics card, oh, and I'm running windows XP
