Last night I got windows auto update agent alerts me that there is a newer driver for my 8800GTX (04/06/2007 per microsoft). The driver is dated in March (I forgot the exact date).

I didn't do the update since I checked nvidia site and there was no such thing.

OK; What's the heck; I just updated the driver recommended by the WindowsUpdate.

Original 100.65 driver under device driver:

Driver Date: 02/10/2007
Driver Version: 7.15.11.65

After updated the driver:

Driver Date: 03/22/2007
Driver Version: 7.15.11.170

Soooooo, you'd rather have Microsoft provide your driver for your vid card over Nvidia? hehe. Just use the latest from Nvidia's site and NEVER auto update through ANY windows operating system. Otherwise crap like this happens. Always.

"Crap"? Please define "crap". He got a newer driver - he went from .65 to .170, and the compile/release date went from 2/10 to 3/22 - what's the problem?

nVidia makes both drivers.

This dislike of Windows driver updates (especially in Vista) just isn't rational.

This driver fixed few issues as far as I can tell thus far.

1. Vista Hold'Em poker is no longer blinking.
2. DVD playback is no longer stutter.
3. Titan Quest/Immortal Throne seems to perform better.

One problem introduced; but doesn't bother me:

1. Windows Vista Aero is half broken. Alt-Tab is no longer does 3-D flip.

Alt-Tab always does 3-D for me before this driver. Removing and Installing new graphic driver will disable Aero; you have to re-enable it after the driver installed.

I reckon we'll be seeing a new driver around April 17 (8600 launch day) and another one either May 1 or May 15 (8850 Ultra launch). There may even be another in between depending on exactly when R600 launches  ;)

Same for me. Win Key+Tab is Flip3d.

Right! I was wrong. It's Windows + Tab alright. It's not broken then.
