I'm considering upgrading my lappy hdd and I'm not completely sure what route to go, and if I should hold off a little longer if something interesting is around the corner. I want speed, but I dont really want to settle for sub 100gb ssd (and 120gb is borderline), and dont really wanna shell out more cash than that for a large ssd, so I've been looking at the seagate xt 500gb hybrid drive. I was wondering if there has been any rumours about successors to it or any other manufacturers planning on releasing similar drives since its been out for a fair while?

I've heard of a Samsung hybrid drive, but it was based on a 5400RPM spindle speed. Hitachi was supposedly going to make one but I don't know what happened to it. Also, Hitachi supposedly makes a hybrid optical drive, for some reason.

So, unless further product announcements are forthcoming, I think the Momentus XT is the current performance leader for anything with a spindle.

unfortunately, seagate bought samsung, so we'll be lucky to see that ever surface.

Wasnt aware of that. Doesnt sound any good with less competition, not to mention samsungs drives were solid in most cases. So I guess its down to XT, or hold off a bit longer and see where ssd prices goes.
