I have a new drive that makes a clicking noise. it seems to work fine. tested with HD tuner, and long error scan showed all green. S.M.A.R.T. via speedfan shows 93% fitness and performance. I've transferred about 500G of data seemingly w/o problem.

it doesn't sound like the normal click of death, that is, it's not a repeated scratching, like it's stuck trying to read the same thing over and over. sounds like someone clucking their tongue trying to get their cat to come to them. it's not constant, but sporadic.

I hesitate to say what the drive is, but yes, it's a 1.5TB seagate barracuda 7200.11.

how worried should I be? is it the click of death, precursor to the click of death, or just an anomalous seek noise?

Exactly, and back it up ASAP if you have the space. Don't store anything important on it in the mean time.

update: it wasn't the barracuda making the noise, it was something else. my bad! I assume since it started making noises after I installed it, it must be the barracuda. see what happens when you have a bad rep? people assume the worst of you :)
