New Dream Theater CD

got it yesterday, gave it a listen straight through. Early opinion: meh. Seems like it was rushed.

the instrumental 'Stream of Consciousness' is pretty tight

Agreed. The instumental is awesome. The other songs sound just...different. When I listen to As I Am, I feel like I am listening to Metallica.

Dream Theater on their worst day is better than 99.9% of the so-called musicians that are out there today. I love the new CD.

After giving the new cd a listen for a week, my opinion is that this cd is what I've been waiting for from DT for quite a while.

Petrucci is angry and takes it out on his guitar. Labrie is angry and takes it out on his vocal chords. Portnoy is angry and takes it out on his double bass drums...........

I like it!

My only complaint with DT is that their last concert here in Detroit nearly wrecked my hearing. Earplugs go with me to their next concert.

Heh, I was going to start a thread on this. I don't see many DT fans.

This album is certainly different, and the CD looks strangely like the "Images and Words" CD. It's darker for sure, but I like it better than 6°.

I give it a Meh+.

I still find myself listening to A Change of Seasons and Scenes From a Memory. The new one is kinda meh. Kinda have to be in the mood for it, I guess. I still can't wait to go to a concert though.

I saw them in New Orleans in 2000. It was pretty cool. They did some of the "Scenes From a Memory" stuff, and even "A Change of Seasons".

They were cool, LaBrie tried to fix my friend's camera so we could take a pic of them, but he ended up just getting like 6 pics of LaBrie's feet. He said he wasn't a camera repairman. 😀

If you had to compare, is it more like Images and Words or more like 6 Degrees?

I saw them live in London a few years ago. I was pretty let down. Technically amazing? Yes. Emotionaly engaging? No.

hmm, I'm surprised I didn'y reply to this earlier, or even start it. 🙂

I like the new CD. I am a diehard metalhead, so I've liked the metal aspect of DT rather than the prog side. I'd say this is my second favorite DT CD, right after SFAM. It's more like SDOIT than anything else; heavy, lots of "wanky" solos, but some surprisingly profound moments. Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Consciousness are the two best tracks. It took me a while to like In the Name of God, but that is an instant classic.

Highly recommended.

Not all of it is great (Honor Thy Father... wtf?), but there are some really excellent tracks on that album. Good shlt.
