I've been seeing ads in the paper for digital tvs that are hdtv compatible and so on. I dont mean the super expensive plasmas, but the 2000 dollar or so 50 inch digital ones. Do these have any DVI input, or way of connecting to a computer. I am looking for a solution for a home theater with computer set up, but the quality of video out i get from my radeon card is insufficient. Anybody know about these?

ScottP, if I'm not mistaken, HDTV's do have a DVI input as this is the way an HDTV decoder would be hooked up. As for a computer rig setup, I'm sure someone else will post you answer.

Can anyone confirm about the hooking up of a computer to the DVI port? How's the quality?

I use a Radeon 8500 with their VGA-to-component adapter. It works great and the quality is very nice.

Here is a link to a pic of my HTPC.

My 46" Mitsubishi HDTV Ready TV does NOT have a DVI connector. I don't think I've seen any TV's with DVI connectors. To hook up the HDTV box, my TV uses component cables. To use your computer on your HDTV you need to get one with a VGA connector or get a "transcoder" that converts the VGA signal to Component. They run about 100 bucks. Or you can buy a Radeon 8500 and HDTV Adapater.

Sweeet! I've been going back and forth between ordering and not ordering a Radeon AIW 8500DV and getting the HDTV Adapter. I think that just pushed me over the edge. I think I will order it today.

If you really want the best quality from an HTPC you should get a VGA transcoder from Key Digital or Audio Authority. It will let you do 540p with DVD playback. The ATI component dongle limits you to 480p (due to Macrovision). Transcoders cost a lot though (around $150-200).

Glad to be of service. :D I really like it. Of course, I would rather have a transcoder, but they are much more expensive. I give the HDTV adapter a big thumbs-up.
