any suggestions for the best choice for under 200ish...? i would like an slr-like one, but my wife wants a compact. i have seen some that sort of bridge the gap so to speak. i would likr 5x optical zoom because digital zoom is worthless. does anyone have any experiences good or bad?

That's asking a lot for $200 I think....

There are a lot of canon fanboys around here, and I'm kind of one of them ;)

I've had a canon powershot A40 for about 3 years now and I'm still happy with it. I got some lenses for it that have allowed me to get better zoom, wide angle, and better macro.

So anyway, If I were getting another camera, I'd personally pick another canon because I've been quite happy with mine. In the $200-ish range, you could get an A510 or A520.

Each has 4x optical zoom which is close to your requirement.

Here's one recommendation. The Canon SD20. It is a fixed lens, however. But that's what makes is desireable. It is very sharp for its size. And it is very portable. $271 from buydig.com.

You're only going to find a deal that good on a used camera. It just so happens that I have a Pentax Optio S4 4mp Ultra Compact camera for sale for around that price range. Let me know if you're interested. You will NOT be disappointed. ;)
