New digital camera from Sony!!! 0.8inch thin and 2.4inch tall 5mp!!!

Dang that thing is small. IMHO I wouldn't like it because it's too small and I'd think you wouldn't be able to hold it still enough while taking a picture or you'd loose it too easily.

That camera has two (bad) things going against it:

-Sony doesn't use CFII
-Too small to effectively use 5MP sensor. Lenses are very important! If the optics cannot gather sufficient light you're gonna have to increase ISO (which means much more noise), increase exposure which makes blurry pix. Plus the flash is practically on-axis so people and pet shots always have the evil eye.

The camera would be fine if it were 2MP. Of course people wouldn't consider it seriously nowadays in the "more is better" society we live in. :|

Cheers!

Don't you think that the Sony engineers thought about all of this before going ahead and making this design?

Wow. I guess that takes the guesswork out of my "Pentax, Minolta or Canon" debate...

That'll be about #3 or 4 on my list of things-to-buy.

From the release:

The slim metallic design of the Cyber-shot T1 digital camera is attributed to a new Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® optical lens that operates within the camera rather than extending out. In spite of its compact design, the camera still features a five megapixel CCD image sensor and a 3X optical zoom to ensure great image quality.

I agree. I betcha a quality shot would be impossible unless you stay perfectly still + have good lighting.

I'd definately take the dRebel over this but I am also putting this on my things to buy list. I had the V1 and it served it's purpose. It was a wonderful little camera. I'm hoping this guy will do itself justice as well.

Why should they? People are going to buy it anyway. "Oh look it's small. Oh look it's 5 megapixels. And most importantly, it's Sony so it must be good!"

I got a question, just curious about this since we are on the subject of cameras. How does one learn the expertise to design cameras? Is there a branch of physics which deals specifically with lenses, light, reflection, prisms, etc?

Considering that minolta had HUGE problems purifying a reflective prism to the point of being effective enough for a 2 megapixel camera with an internal 3x optical zoom, I don't see how a 5 megapixel sensor can retain anywhere near that quality in the actual shot.

What engineers? You mean Sony's marketing team.
