Ok... so I haven't posted in a long *** time. I've been lurking for over a year now, but I still remain faithful to Anandtech and these forums... it's where to go to get some news and advice. I've built 500+ systems in the last 6 years (joined this forum before they recreated it and reset accounts sometime between 1998 and 1999 - back when OCing a P2 300 SL2W8/SL2YK or a Celeron 300 to 450 or 512 on an ABIT BH6 was the sweet spot for OCing) and this is one has put me at a loss for what to do, so any advice would help. I ordered a new system 2 weeks ago and ended up ordering a few new parts thinking that either the motherboard or CPU was DOA. I'll list them below not as an invitation to be flamed, but to encourage any thoughts or advice in hopes that from one OC enthusiast to another, you would understand why I am so ****** off (waiting two weeks for parts, testing and still not getting successful booting results) and want to play with my new toys so I can reap the speed upgrade. We know how impatient we can be 8D (thanks be to the lastestegg.com for speedy delivery). Anyhow, here they are:

The essentials for booting
-DFI NFII Ultra Infinity
-DFI NFII Ultra B Lan Party
-OCZ 1GB Dual Channel Platinum Limited Edition PC3200 2-2-2-7 (WinBond BH-6)
-AMD Barton 2500+ PQZFA0349UPMW
-AMD Mobile 'Barton' 2600+ IQYFA0401UPMW
-AMD Mobile 'Barton' 2600+ IQYFA0348UPMW
-Antec Sonata Case with Vantec Stealth as 2nd fan and 380Watt TruePower Power Supply
-ATI All-In-Wonder 9800Pro
-HEC 350Watt Power Supply (with P4 12Volt connector)
-Antec 350Watt Power Supply with Smart Fan (with P4 12Volt connector)
-ThermalRight SP97 (modded the back plate by cutting off the P4 mounting hole in the corner to fit the motherboards mounting hole in the top left)
-ThermalRight SLK-900(A)
-Arctic Silver 5
-Arctic Silver 3

Other non-essentials for booting
-2 x 120GB Maxtor 7200rpm 8MB cache RAID0 IDE
-Promise UltraTrak 100 (latest 2.0.0.33 BIOS)
-2 x 74GB Western Digital Raptor 10000rpm 8MB cache RAID0 SATA
-Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
-IOGear KVM Micro GCS62
-Logitech Z-680 Speakers
-Zalman Noiseless VGA Heat Pipe (ZM80C-HP)
-Pioneer DVD+-RW DVR-106D
-LiteOn CD-RW LTR24102B
-LiteOn DVD JLMS XJ-HD163D
-Teac Black Floppy 1.44MB Drive
-Iomega Zip Drive
-Dell P1110 21" Trinitron CRT
-Mistumi Keyboard
-Microsoft Intellimouse Optical

Ok, so when I've tried booting with ANY or the CPU's listed above with AS5 and SP97, on either DFI board with any DIMM slot population configuration possible (both or one of the DIMMS in any slot) using ANY of the PSU's above, I get no video out signal. I've tested the PSU's, the RAM and the Video Card and they all work fine in other systems (permitting those other systems supply enough juice to the AGP slot - unlike mid-tower ATX Dell Optiplex GX270's at work with P4 3.2's in them). Both motherboards have the standby power LED lit. Both Motherboards light the DIMM LED when powered on. All of the fans spin (regardless of whether they are fewd by the special Antec fan reserved cables for the Sonata PSU). On the Lan Party, the ALL of the 4 indicator LEDs are always lit when the power is on. I never see anything other than all 4 lit (which is somewhat strange as I would expect to see them light up in the POST sequences outlined in the manual like the onbaord digital readout on my Epox 8KHA+ during POST) nor do I hear a memory check by the HDD's if they are plugged in. I've tried almost all of the possible configurations and now have limited it down to just the PSU's, the motherboards, one stick of RAM, the SP97, and the videocard (which I do plug in the power connector for but I also am forced to use the DVI to VGA adapter, which works fine in my other Intel and Athlon systems on the same monitor and KVM switch). I have the Antec 92mm Thermal speed fan plugged directly into the motherboard CPU FAN header and blowing into the SP97. The SP97 is a tight fit on both motherboards but it does fit similar to this picture at DFI support. I don't think it is a real problem, although this could be my problem and I guess my next step is to install the SLK-900(A) on the mtherboard while it is unmounted to the case (on top of the mylar bag it arrived in). None of the CPU dies are cracked or crushed (never done that anyway but I have witnessed a friend chip a corner and another smolder one due to forgetting to put on the HS/F directly after I showed him the THG video of what would happen if he didn't put the HS/F on before booting). I will report back in a few after trying the SLK-900(A) and see if there are any replies or ideas. Another strange and somewhat stupid thought is the DVI to VGA connector not powering the KVM switch enough to send a signal that the monitor gets? I have tried the ATI AIW in other systems and it worked. Also, I have tried a separate keyboard, mouse and video connector to monitor input 2 to no avail so i suppose that is not it either. I figured this would not be OT as I fully intend to squeeze every last ounce of OCing ability from this new system while making it quiet and frosty as ****.

Completely get rid of the KVM for awhile, to eleminate it as a possible. If it still doesn't work without the KVM, I would definitely be suspecting the motherboard, because the Antec TruePower 380 that comes in a Sonata will power just about any system.

That's what I was thinking. I don't suppose it's a bad PSU as I am seeing the same result from the other two, which are currently powering this and another system. That is not to say I can rule it out because I have not tried it on another system as of yet. Do you suppose that the SP97 is the problem? I thought I had read around here that the SP97 will work with the mod I did for the back plate, despite it being a tight fit with that ATX power connector and capacitor in the way (as is depicted in the link of my original post). The capacitor is slightly askew in order for the SP97's heat pipe and the ATX power connector to fit. Do you know if it's worked for other people? i can't seem to find any problematic posts about this around here...

I think I found the problem. Diode FB29 gets sheared off of the motherboard one one end (closes to the northbridge) if you attach the through the motherboard mount closest to the northbridge chipset. Off to raido shack to see if I can't get a soldering iron to put the one end back on. This is crap! guess I should've heeded their warning and used an SLK-900(A). Hope this works.
