I am an AMD-Fanboy and I use Arch Linux. Everything is in INR (Indian Rupees).

Approximate Purchase Date: 1 month
Budget Range: 70,000 INR After Shipping

System Usage:
  • 12-15 hours a day
  • Browser is open with 10-15 tabs in each window and 2 separate windows + running JupyterLab in it all the time.
  • Programming
  • Data Science and Machine Learning
  • Watching 1080p movies
  • Streaming 1080p videos on YouTube, Vivo etc
  • Browsing/Searching on internet.

Preferred Website: https://www.amazon.in/
Location: Hyderabad, INDIA
Overclocking: No. I don't play games
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, 1920x1200

Why I am Upgrading: I have a 10 years old computer, AMD Athlon II X3 440 and it struggles to run Jupyter Lab I mentioned above and sometimes CPU usage goes 100% and it becomes unresponsive for 10-20 min when it comes to opening video streaming sites like YouTube. Its PSU has died already and keyboard and mouse are dying too. This is my 4th keyboard because I do programming, hence lot of typing. Monitor got some 2 inches sized 3 circular black spots in left corner. Used it a lot. Antec 300 Case I have, its buttons, even though I have lubricated many times, have gotten extremely rough now. So want to just upgrade.

UPDATE - Dec 3, 2018: Seems like either Motherboard or Air Cooler had dimensional problems with cabinet. Hence I played with PCPartPicker and came up with this updated list. It does not show APC BX1100C-IN UPS, which you can find on Amazon India.

Parts list sounds pretty good to me.

Corsair VS450 is pretty low-end, and you might want something better in the future, if you upgrade the CPU to a 2600(X) or 2700(X). But for a 2400G, it should be fine.

I don't know if a 600VA UPS is going to be enough. That's like 330W capability. Your rig might take more than that, if you add a discrete GPU.

If you're serious about Machine Learning, you might want to get an NVidia RTX card, if they open them up to user compute ML capabilities. I don't know if NV will allow that though.

Also, if you are "wearing out" keyboards, look at getting a mechanical one, they last longer (in theory). Plus, you can clickity-clack your neighbors or spouse to death. 😛

Well Larry, all ML work of mine will be cloud-based, then I am not into RNNs or CNNs. I am more in BigData side than ML research. That is why I did not want a dedicated GPU.

I see RX 560 outperforms Vega 11 by a good margin and 2600 outperforms 2400G by a really good margin. I have to upgrade my PSU and UPS both: Corsair VS550 instead of VS450 and APC BX1100 instead of BX600

Thanks Larry

You should consider getting an SSD as well as the 1TB hard disk drive. It will make using your computer much more enjoyable.

I have 1TB HDD with me, 8 years old though. I think i can use SSD for Linux installation and daily work (everything is stored on cloud) HDD for storage of videos.

I am unable to edit OP, it keeps on reporting links as spam. Hence here is the upgraded parts list:
  • Ryzen 5 2600
  • Corsair Hydro CW-9060028-WW
  • Gigabyte AORUS Elite or MSI Tomahawk B450
  • Corsair VS550
  • WD Green 240GB M.2 2280 Internal SSD , for Linux installation
  • APC BX1100C-IN UPS

Hey OP. Thanks for considering Seagate! The SkyHawk is a drive built for surveillance use-cases, and the biggest difference you'll notice is the SkyHawk has a slower RPM (5900 RPM to the BarraCuda's 7200 RPM at 1TB capacity). It's firmware (dubbed ImagePerfect) is engineered for use cases like DVR, NVR, CCTV, etc. where the drive will be writing constantly to manage massive streams of highly detailed video data without frame drops, and so the drive can tend to be a bit slow on reads. The ideal use-case for a SkyHawk is something writing roughly 90% of the time and reading/playing back the other 10%. The BarraCuda is our more common desktop drive, and so it is designed for more standard, balanced read/write workloads.
