anyone know if the new xps15 / xps13 with thunderbolt3 will support external gpu's?

the xps15 with the 4core i7 would really be a nice mobile desktop replacement for me, provided that the few times I want to game i can get nice frame rates.

from my research it doesn't, it has a thunderbolt dock to connect up to three 4k displays, but now dedicated gpu in that dock. believe you will have to go with an alienware to get the external gpu

I was more curious if it is able to.

I thought having a thunderbolt3 port by default allowed a egpu. Not that dell will have a dock with one.

There's a couple units that support external GPU's today (Alienware & MSI I believe) but only through a proprietary connector and expansion box. Still - it's a step in the right direction.

According to intel, TB3 officially supports eGPUs, but as it stands there are no solutions of which I am aware.

It's a pretty straightforward problem to solve, it's a question of cost and market. As it stands there still only a few systems out there that'd actually support it.
