New Dell 8500 Laptop.

What's everyone think of this bad boy?

I can't tell if the case is still plastic or if it's a magnesium type... I'm thinking it's plastic 🙁

Wide-screen is nice 🙂

8500

A little smaller and lighter than the 8200, but still pretty big. Adds USB 2.0, but only 1 PCMCIA slot... You can get a GF4 4200 Go in it, which probably drops the battery life to half an hour. 😉

And I think grey plastic looks even cheaper than black plastic.

Isn't there a GF4 440 chipset for Laptops? Apple has it in their new 17". Wouldn't that be even faster?

I might be wrong here but after looking at it u can either have 1 cd/dvd drive and 1 battery or 2batteries. on my I8200 u can have 2 batteries and CD/DVD drive.

if thats the case then I8500 sucks 😛

Wow, you're right. It's 2 spindle like the 4150, while the 8200 is 3. Kinda crappy for a laptop that big... Also, what's up with the 2300$ base price? (8200 starts at 1200$)

Geforce 4 4200 probably sucks up to much power to be a good laptop video card. Unless you going to keep the laptop plugged in all the time. I havent seen any tests on how long battery lasts but if it cuts battery life down more than 30min over ATI 9000 mobility then its not worth it IMO

Yeah, I wouldn't buy it. Too exspensive, at least for what you're getting. I'd rather get a PowerBook; more power and thinner/lighter.

According to the spec pages of Dell and Apple, the 17" Powerbook is only lighter if you use the Imperial system to weigh it, if you use the metric system, the Powerbook weighs more...

http://www.apple.com/powerbook/specs.html
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/products/model_inspn_3_inspn_8500.htm#tabtop

Apple
Size and weight (17-inch model)
Height: 1.0 inch (2.6 cm)
Width: 15.4 inches (39.2 cm)
Depth: 10.2 inches (25.9 cm)
Weight: 6.8 pounds (3.1 kg) with battery and optical drive installed (8)

Dell
15.4-inch Wide-Aspect SXGA+ and 15.4-inch Wide-Aspect UXGA display
Height: 1.52-inch (38.6 mm)
Width: 14.22-inch (361.2 mm)
Depth: 10.87-inch (276.1 mm)
Weight: 6.9 lbs. (2.96 kg) with travel module, battery and Harddrive.

So make sure you buy the metric version if you buy a Dell....
Both systems do agree that the Apple is thinner though.

Wide screen 1920x1200 is VERY nice. I'd take that over a 17" screen. And 2gb of ddr!!! Too bad Dell charges $3300 for it. The single bay is okay...so long as a it's a superdrive 😉

The 17 in Powerbook has a widescreen aspect ratio too. 🙂

This is the mobile Pentium 4....

The keyword in my sentence is new...aka Centrino.

🙂

Centrino is based on P3 and I think it'll be called Pentium-M.

Anyways, it's coming out on March 12th, so we should see much nicer notebooks coming out after that. 🙂

Check out Anand's articles from IDF, but Centrino should provide us with some much more attractive PC laptops. Performance looks good too, apparently outdoing any Pentium 4-M with better battery life. I got the impression from Samsung's website the other day that their new Centrino laptop would debut on the launch day, so it's just a few days now.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love apples and the 17" is nice but screen real estate wise 1920x1200 is much more valuable to me than a bigger 1440x900 display - though I suppose vision is important too 🙂
