New deal:
HP 42" Plasma HDTV for $1400+tax at Best Buy, with free Philips DVD recorder

Old deal:
Amazon has
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FEHTDC/002-4591885-9319247?ie=UTF8">Toshiba 42HL196 42" 1080P LCD HDTV for $1800 with free shipping
</a>
J&R has it for the same price ($1700+$100 shipping)

Seems like good deals. I'm wondering if I should jump on either one now or wait till Black Friday.

Bump.

Read the 42HL196 thread on AVS Forums this morning after I saw the TV last week. Seems like an excellent buy. In person, it looked great. Would like to hear some more opinions on it, because I'm close to pulling the trigger.

Perhaps an even better deal, if you prefer plasma:

HP 42" Plasma HDTV at Best Buy for $1400, plus free DVR, Model: PL4260N

Ummm just so you guys know this "HDTV" by hp has a resolution of 1024x768 that's a 4:3 aspect ratio... nobody broadcast HD signal in that format... it's a computer resolution. HP...?

Pixels are shaped differently (square, circle, rectangle.. one of those).. it's still 16:9.

Resolution is still king... so the deals arent equivalent... 10x7 is nowhere near 1080p

But the 1080p set costs almost 30% more. It's the age-old question: Is it worth it to pay more?

It seems like most of the sub-$2000 flat panels have a 1024x768 rez.
