I was seriously thinking about getting a C7 Corvette, (see my Volvo S60 vs BMW M235i vs C7 thread) but the roads around here quickly convinced me that I needed an SUV of some sort.

I started off looking at the XC60, Q5, X3, and GLK in all trims.
-The XC60 is hideous in basically every color but bright red, and even then I just wasn't that into it.
-The Q5 seemed great in all regards, even the 2.0T seemed peppy
-The X3 was either sluggish (in the 4 cylinder) or overpriced (in the AWD 6 cylinder)
-I went to three Mercedes dealerships and never got helped by anyone, so the GLK was out. Still kinda mystified, was driving a 2011 Acura TL, well dressed white guy wearing a Tag

The trim of Q5 became my sole consideration. I wanted something more fun to drive every day than the Acura (I'm getting rid of the Volvo & the Lightning since they're just sitting at my house in Dallas while I'm 400 miles away.)

So I started looking for an SQ5, but also considering the Q5 TDI, since it was rumored to have very similar performance up to 60mph. I ended up driving both, loved the SQ5. The exhaust note is great and it sounds beastly when you're hammering it. The brakes were also phenomenal (15" discs.) To be honest I loved everything about it. The TDI was underwhelming in comparison. Performance was similar to maybe 30mph, and it didn't sound cool. It also wasn't totally optioned out like the SQ5, though it was an S-line. Price was similar. Also, gas mileage isn't much of a concern since I live ~1 mile from work, and haven't lived more than 3 miles from work in years.

Then my buddy that's super into cars (2014 M3, 2014 Subaru BRZ) told me that for about the same money I could get into a Porsche Macan. So I left the Audi dealer and went down the road to the only Porsche dealer in town. They treated me great, answered my questions, let me test drive the only Macan they had (only 4 for sale in Texas at the time.) Driving dynamics aren't as beastly as the SQ5, particularly acceleration and braking, but it's actually just as fast down low, and faster up top. The brakes simply aren't as good, but I was willing to live with it. Also the interior blew me away. The quality of the materials was great. The other big selling point is that the Q5 is due for a total model refresh in less than 2 years, whereas this is the first year for the Macan.

My only expectations were black on black with the ability to listen to bluetooth audio books from my phone. The Audi dealer couldn't make it happen. The Porsche dealer somehow found a Macan that fit the bill coming into port Sunday and I put a deposit down on it. I took delivery Tuesday night. It has every option I could have hoped for (aside from not being a Turbo) except for the wheels I wanted. Purchasing them separately costs $7,600, so I think I can live with the ones it came with.

It's really comfortable, it sounds really neat when it downshifts, and the transmission might be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It doesn't *feel* like it shifts, and it happens so fast! Handling is pretty good, but I'm not a crazy good driver or anything. It works great for the main reasons I wanted it: It handles all the bumps and potholes excellently AND I took 6 garbage bags full of stuff to good will last night and it all fit in the back under the cargo cover. Forward and reverse parking sensors & cameras are fantastic, the best I've seen in any car. I love how it shows you your projected path according to how you have the wheel turned.

The steering wheel controls kinda suck, and it has a bazillion buttons on the center console. Also there's not much headroom in the back. Also I can't figure out how to get more than the drivers door to unlock with the "enter and drive" function.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. It handles the 2 miles of commuting a day like a champ. I'm going to drive it back to Dallas this weekend to sell the Lightning and Volvo, so I'll see if I can get it up to 150mph on the 130 toll road.

I only took a couple pics, but if anyone's interested in anything in particular, I can snap some more later.

Also, when I get out of this god forsaken city in a couple years, I think I'll get one of these instead of a Corvette:

Two mile commute? Make sure you get out and stretch its legs from time to time!

Also, what's the size like? A crossover like the Jeep Cherokee, or like a hot hatch[back]?

That's cool vehicle. Never saw one of these. Is it like a smaller cayenne,…?

It was styled and designed like a smaller Cayenne, but it's essentially a Porsche version of the Audi Q5, as it shares the same platform with that and it seems most of the Audi A# series.

edit:
And I answered my own previous question. :p
It's larger than a traditional hot hatch, and more in line with the small crossover segment... which is quickly becoming a pseudonym for "large hatchback", to which I have no problem. I'm actually kind of fond of the Jeep Cherokee - it does help that it is made in my hometown. :awe:
Speaking of the Cherokee, I do hope they fix the damn headlight design in a redesign, the sooner the better imho. It does look much better in person than in pictures, but it still just doesn't look as well as it could.

Like I said, I'm driving it to Dallas and back this weekend and plan on hitting some high speeds on the 130 tollway (glad I have a badge and a military ID, plus paper plates.)

I wanted to check out a Jeep Cherokee SRT, but when I went to the dealer they said, "We have one, and the owner drives it most days..... But it's still for sale." Then they couldn't show me the car, and they didn't have any brochures. And to top it off they said, "Well, the last one we sold was for $78,000, is that ok?" And I laughed and left. To be fair, most of the dealerships in San Antonio are a joke. Even the BMW, Audi, and Mercedes dealerships. I did most of my test drives in Dallas.

Yeah saw the trip - just felt like saying it'll need more trips to keep it healthy.

Also, there is no Jeep Cherokee SRT. There is a Grand Cherokee SRT, but there is no SRT version of the Cherokee. Very, very different vehicle. The Grand Cherokee is a full SUV (well, mid-size), and will chug gas like one too. The Cherokee is a "CUV" (crossover) that is built on the same platform as the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200.

Great choice! I almost got an SQ5 last spring, but settled on a 3.0T S-Line Q5.

I'd like to try a Macan. I'm sure the handling is better and I know I'd love the transmission as I've had a DSG before. I'm not crazy about the rear hatch angle, seems you lose a lot of space in the trunk.

Did you get Active Suspension, Torque Vectoring diff?

Yeah I meant Grand Cherokee SRT. I looked at dealer stock online, and frankly I'm shocked that they increased in price by $30,000 over the course of 3 years.

I already miss that supercharged baseball bat the chest acceleration from the SQ5. But I'll just take the Lightning out for a spin when I get back to Dallas. ;)

You do lose a lot of trunk space and headroom in the rear, but it's still more spacious than my outgoing Acura TL.

Yeah, got PASM. You can set the gauge LCD screen to show you the percentage of torque sent to each wheel too!

Congrats on the new car! I love this about new cars, and sadly, my 2015 Rex doesn't have it.

It has a rearview camera, but no sensors and no "projected path" overlays, just kind of a metering stick for how far you are from the objects in view.

More pics of the center console? That's a LOT of buttons around the gearshift.

Sorry, I haven't really driven it much this weekend to get the console pic. Like I said in the OP, I drive like 2 miles a day to work and back and on the weekends typically take an Uber everywhere so that I can get rickety-rickety-wrecked.

My building did just finally start assigning parking spaces, and whoever did it did a great job:

The 911 is a 2015 Turbo S btw. He was rocking a 2013 911 base model until like two months ago.

That grill is aggressive looking. Also, that center console has more buttons than a Razor gaming keybard!

Slick looking crossover, Nebor.

The rear hatch angle was likely chosen for its aerodynamic properties. Sloping the roof a bit and providing a sharp separation can provide a significant improvement in highway MPG numbers.

EDIT: And reduces drag at high speeds.

OP - nice wheels!!

The wife and I test-drove one on Veteran's Day and it was AMAZING. Drove and handled like a dream.

Wife is going to get the diesel version next year, as soon as it can be ordered. All of the handling and great transmission, but better fuel economy for longer trips. Cannot wait. :)

Drove it up to Dallas for the holiday. Got 22mpg overall. The 15 minutes I spent with the cruise set at 110 out on highway 130 really killed it. Also, I let the lane keep assist steer for about 10 minutes with the cruise set at 90mph before it beeped at me and flashed a screen that said "Lane keep assist is passive. Driver participation is mandatory!" :D

Kinda poor mpg, but I did make it from San Antonio to Dallas in 3:45!
