My friend just got a new cat for his dorm even though they're not allowed to have cats. It is cute and deserves its own thread.

The cost from the shelter was $50 and he's expecting to have to pay around $160 to get her spayed. Sounds a bit pricey, doesn't it?

Edit: To clarify, the dorm is a suite with two bedrooms and a living room.

Maybe, but if it's a good natured cat then it's money well spent; not only will your friend have a good pet, but by getting he spayed he's making sure she doesn't start going into heat all the time and potentially having kittens.

Depends if they have a suite and all the roomies are in on it. If that's the case, it could work. If it's one room, then I agree...

It's a suite with three total people and they're all cool with it.

More pics added.

$160 to get her spayed!!!??!!!

My vet does it for me for $45 for a male and $60 for a female.

I think he charges like $85 male and $95 female to every one else.

Cute cat... ginger tabbys are usually really good natured.

edit... and why was she not spayed at the shelter??? I have never seen an animal leave the shelter unfixed, unless it was requested by the new owner specifically.

He's wanted his own pet ever since his dog died...it's innocent enough, should be fine. He's a great caretaker.

Yeah I thought that was a bit extreme myself. Like you said, the shelter in my county fixes them for you, and the price of a cat is like $40. This shelter he has to deal with, costs $50 for the cat, and then you have to get it fixed on your own, and you must do it within 60 days and prove to them that you did or else they can take the animal back and fine you and stuff. When you show them this proof they'll give you $30 back, but still....$160 that his nearest vet is asking for is a lot.

Well I can't see any reason why this won't turn out all skittles and beer.

A dorm room is going to be hard on a cat... And yes that is friggin' expensive. My cat was $95 for spay and declaw...

It's a "dorm," but it's a suite for three people with two bedrooms and a central living room.
