New crop of mobos with custom IO shields - WTF?

I mean, how am I supposed to fit that weirdly looking IO shield into my standard ATX case? They just won't hold there. Glue them? With what? This is really annoying and it's starting to piss me off. It's pretty much impossible to find a standard ATX moboard nowadays.

What do you think? Is there a case which would accept these custom IO shields w/o solving any unnecessary hiccups?
What's your experience?

So what model do you have (of a case)?

Well its a cooler-master... but its the cheap one... 🙁 the one thats basically an Antec, Chieftec, Chenming inside... but never had problems with my other cases though... and those are generic. 🙂

I have 2 antec sx830's and 1 sx630 and many upgrades to them. I have never had any probs with io plates that came with the mobo's

No problems with coolermaster cases here. Once, I had a plate that had to have the edges bent out a bit so that it would 'click' into place.

Really, long as it won't fall right through, your motherboard will hold it in place once it is attached.

The ATX standard actually does not define the layout of ports in the I/O area! It only defines the size/location of the I/O area. (the standard does provide some reference layouts however, one of which all mobo makers and case makers have been using since ATX's inception) As long as a motherboard keeps all of its I/O ports within this area its a ATX standard mobo. The ATX v2.1 spec can be obtained here: http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/atx/atx2_1.pdf

While the standard does define how the shield should attach to the case (see http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/atx/io_ref.zip), some case manufactuers do not follow this standard like they should, instead using their own design. On cases like this, standard ATX I/O plates will often not fit very well, or at all.

So basically, its your case that is non-standard, not your motherboard.

I've got 2 cases using the custom i/o plates. Mine is a lianli 6089 and the i/o plate fits perfectly, albeit too tight imo, since I had to use a hammer to smack it in. The other is a skyhawk case (forget the model name) and I have a i/o plate that came with my abit at7, and it fits loosely. Although it's not annoying, since I never go to the back of the case to plug/unplug something. But when I do, it can be annoying, and scary too, since I'm afraid I might just short circuit something (ie the plate touches a metal part of my mobo etc)

Some of the refurb mobo's at Newegg come w/o I/O shields/plates. Is there a place online that these can be purchased other than going bak to mobo manufacturer?
