New CPU with XP

I am planning to build a new system soon. Right now I don't plan to change to Vista. I would be OK with $200-300 for the CPU, so a Quad core is within reach(thinking Q6600). Under Windows XP would a quad core shine or would I need Vista to take advantage of such a CPU?

Right now I plan to do mostly photo editing with PS CS3 and Capture NX. I also do occasional dvd encoding(not that often). And might get back into gaming a bit, but of course not the primary use.

XP will recognize and use all 4 cores. (Either XP home or Pro.....)

Both Windows XP Pro and Home will support both dual core and quad cores processors as long as they are on the same processors. There are no additional licensing fees per core. But when you have a system using two processors, only Windows XP Pro supports this function.
