New CPU Temps too high!

I just purhcased the FX-55 and reused my XP-90 that I had on my 3200+

I cleaned off the heatsink using q-tips (cotton swabs) and use rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. I did the same for the new CPU too.

I also followed the instructions on artic silvers website for applying to refresh what I did in the past.

Im seeing idle temperatures around 33-35C which first I know is too high.. I just ran an instensive game and the CPU temperatures got to 51C as the high and staying around 50C... This is way too high for only default voltage on the CPU, and I can't figure it out...

I reset all the bios settings back to default for when I planned to overclock this chip, but I can't until these temperatures are lowered... About 5 minutes after the game and the cpu temp is staying around 44C.

I have no idea what it could be thats causing this.... I should be seeing around 25C temp.

25 degrees C for idle temps is asking an aweful lot from an outdated XP-90 (I assume the aluminum one). 25C is just over room temperature after all. Mid-30's C idle is not abnormal considering you have a smaller heatsink. The FX will run warmer than the 3200+ anyway.

Just to put it in perspective, I get about 47C load on my 3700+ overclocked to 2.86GHz with a zalman CNPS9500 - definitely a bigger cooler than the XP-90. (I have the fan speed set to medium). Idle is in the mid 30's. Unless you get a bigger heatsink you'll have to live with those temps most likely. That, or maybe putting a very noisy high airflow delta fan on it ;)

Thanks Sparky -

I was just used to the 3200+ temps and what i remember them being before I overclocked it... I do know under 60C is perfectly fine, so I'll see how far I get overclocking without pushing the temperatures too high.

Side Note, I did a search and found out that in comparison to others these temps are normal.

I don't think its worth it, but would buying a new heatsink/fan be worth it? and what kind? I'm thinking probably not.

My AMDs CPUs are 38C/45C under load with ambient of 21C to 28C. That is quite normal for AMD CPUs. My mobos are 26C/33C.

I use an IR temperature sensor to measure my temperatures. In comparison to my ASUSProbe, my IR readings are within 1C or less.

FWIW I have a 3500+ Winchester with an XP-90 and my temps hover around 37-38C at idle and as high as 48C under load.

You are fine.
