Greetings

Put together a system about a year and a half ago.
Asus P5B
Intel E6300 (O/C to 2.2ish mhz)
arctic 7 freezer pro cooler
Mushkin ddr2-800
SilverStone ST50EF-Plus 500w powersupply
Winxp sp2

(recent upgrade - geForce 7950gt 512 to a GeForce 8800GTS KO 678MHZ 512MB)

looking at the specs on the P5B i can put in any LGA775 intel chip.

havent decided what to get yet..would like to get atleast a C2D with more mhz or even Quad core

.but is it a simple matter of just removing the
E6300 - going into bios, change a few settings and am up and running?

or do i have to wipe/reinstall XP?
want to do this as cheaply as possible. would get new MB/memory/cpu if i have to but that
would be a bit down the road.

thanks

Well, its not a lock that it supports all 775 processors. a 45nm quad is probably not supported. Maybe not even the 45nm duo. Lookup cpu support on the ASUS site.

If it does support it, power down, change cpu;s power up. The bios will revert to stock settings, so you need to re-oc the chip.

Edit: it looks like it supports both with bios 1803 or newer, unless the stepping is C1 wolfdale, then its since 1902.

Yeah, Asus is great with the bios support. I'm running a 45nm quad(x3350) on a P5B-E and it works great and overclocks really well. Just update the bios to the latest if you get a 45nm chip and you should be good to go
