I swapped out an X2 3800 cpu and replaced it with a X2 4800 cpu on a ASUS A8V Deluxe mob. I can get it to post and run for a while but then it stops and shuts down. Even if I go into setup it will shut down. Could this be a power supply issue? What can I do to trouble shoot. My bios is up to date. Thanks.

If it's PSU related then open the side of the case (to keep PSU temps down), unplug any devices you don't need and try booting again. (this will also help if it's a thermal problem.

What PSU do you have and how old is it, also what graphics card are you using.

Sounds like it could be heat as well. How much grease did you use on the heatsink? Are you sure the fan is running?

SHAME ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my haste (BELIEVE IT OR NOT) I installed the heat sink fan with the plastic enclosure that covers the base and grease. It's running with no problems now with a cpu temp of 35c idle. Could I have done any damage? Should I remove fan and heat sink and buy some new grease and reinstall or leave well enough alone for now? Am I stupid or what?@#$&*!!!

:D

Could be worse, could spend half an hour panicking over your computer not booting then remembering you turned the PSU off for saftey reasons, then doing it all again an hour later. :Q

As long as the plastic all came off then it won't have damaged the HSF or compromised the thermal pad. The thermal protection should have saved your CPU from instant death. Leave it.

SOme of the thermal pad (GREASE) did stick and come off with the plastic. But temps look good right now. But I want to re-install it if I have to before I close it all up

Heh, everyone has done something at least as stupid. Once I was on the phone with a Dell support rep, years ago, the side of the machine off and the system running. We were debugging an IRQ conflict on a NIC, and at some point he said: ok, take the card out. Two heartbeats later he said: turn the machine off first. It was too late.

Anyway, you should be fine. The CPU did what it was supposed to do to protect itself.
