New CPU or Video?

Should I change my AMD k6-III to a AMD Duron 800mhz or should I change my Voodoo2 to a Geforce 2 MX, or possibly a ATI Radeon?

I'm mostly into driving and shooting games ie. "The world is not enough" once it comes out. Im willing to spend ~$250 for CPU and motherboard or ~$200 for video card

I you only get one or the other, go with the new CPU. Durons are great. If you get the video card, get a Radeon 32.

CPU. The GF2 MX is nice, but the V2 is still supported under most games, and should be able to churn out decent 640x480 and 800x600 framerates.

I have both a K6-2 400 and a T-Bird 750. The T-Bird hands down is far superior. I think it would gain you much more going with the Duron.

You're not going to gain any benefits for either one of the two, one is CPU limited, the other will be video card limited. You gotta have both to get them reach their full potential.

If you can spend $250 for CPU/mobo, I recommend the Tbird 800 with an MSI K7T Pro2, plenty fast, very overclockable.

If you can spend $200 on the video card, see if you can find a cheap GeForce2 GTS, if not then the Radeon DDR will do.

You definitely need a new Duron first. That K6 is the king of crap for 3D games. No video card is going to help you with that.

What BFG10K said. When I went from my K6-3 to my Duron I noticed a massive improvement. I was using a V3 2000 on both CPUs and the Duron made the framerates shoot through the roof.

I later upgraded to a GF2 MX. That helped too but the CPU helped the most. If you went with a Duron now you would not regret it. Upgrade the video card later on when you can.

Both, but since you ask for only one of the possibilties then I would say go for the Duron 🙂. The Duron will give you quite a boost, and some great OC'ing possibilities. I think I've heard that most in here recommend the Duron 700 or 750 to OC. But that was only like price vs performance ratio 🙂

AoD 😉

If only one get the new CPU.

I had a K6-2/350 and that this was as BFG10k so elegantly put it "the king of crap" and I had a V3-2000 (still do for about another week).

I moved up to an Athlon550 which was very playable with my V3-2000. But now the V3 is very much my limit.

See if you can't scrape together an MSi K7TPro, a Duron 600 and a GF2MX.
But if you can only get the one, the CPU would be better.

The K6-X isnt half as bad as everyone makes in out to be, and can provide you with decent frame rates if backed up by a decent video card. They are admittedly far inferior to their Intel counterparts in gaming performance yes, but they can still manage decent frame rates with a good video card.

Ideally you would get both a new video card and processor/mobo. But since you ask for only one of the possibilties then I would say go for the Duron. The Duron will give you quite a boost, and some great OC'ing possibilities provided you unlock the multiplier.

However, I don't think the Voodoo2's going to get any faster even with a say 600 Duron. A new graphics card, say Ati 32meg Radeon, will definitely improve your system. 2D and 3D. Also for a mere 150 dollars... The card is sweet for the price, let alone it's new and drivers are just coming out. Much better that the MX. And in Christmas, you'll have spare change to upgrade to AMD CPU and mobo.

On second thought, scratch the new CPU update. The V2 has been known to have problems with Athlons, and I belive it still holds true with VIA's K*133 chipsets.:Q

I say compromise...

$113 for MSI K7T Pro motherboard
$41 for AMD Duron 600
$146 for ATI Radeon 32MB DDR

That totals to about $300. Then sell your AMD K6-3/motherboard/Voodoo2/2D Card on e-Bay. Final price of upgrade should be under $250. Sounds good? 🙂

Yea, I'd also say that it's a tough call. Neither upgrade alone will really add much to gaming, although what card do you use for 2d? If it's a TNT or other half decent vidcard you maybe able to finally use that instead of the Voodoo2.

I think Protospyder has the best solution though. Sell your parts then upgrade both.

you should definately upgrade the video card but your selection for now should be a CPU so here is what you should do i have both a duron and a thunderbird and i can say that running a Duron at 925 and a Thunderbird at 700 (haven't used the thunderbirdsince my new cooler) are on par now i would'nt have been able to hit 900 without a better cooler so 850 from a 50 dollar 600 is still massive and even with a outdated cool you should be able to hit it. at 130 an A7v is the same price as a KT7 w/o Raid and you get the extra ide controller. (most people who have boughten the raid don't even use it) and a 50 dollar Duron 600 and a 19 cent pencil will be the best solution.

That will save you 50-70 and will be a good start on that Geforce Mx which is about 100 for a pure version.

so for about 280-300 you will get a 850MHz duron and a Geforce2 Mx

UsePricewatchand you will see what i have discribed to you

Definatly get Mobo and CPU... I would go for an overclock special. You should be able to get something running at 1Ghz for $250 (mobo + cpu).

Either way you go you want have much with what you getting LOL.Now a Intel 800 cpu and a Ati or voodoo 5500 video card,yo that is the juice setup for little bit more duckies.🙂

Voodoo3 1000 for $63 or less?

plus

Asus A7V with A duron 600 for $217 or less. You'll need a decent cpu cooler also though.

This setup gave my friend 74fps in quake 3, plays DVD's just fine with Win DVD, and supports high refresh rates.

Cheap and very adequate. I still would save for the Radeon though.

For my 2D card i Have a SiS 6326. So using that card is out of the question when it comes to games. I only use it when the Voodoo 2 is not supported by a game( which is rare).
