New CPU on Old Bios?

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine just gave me his ASUS P5B MB after he upgraded. On the ASUS site it says that it can support the current crop of Core 2 Duo CPUs but with a Bios Update. I was hoping to buy a E2180 to put in it and I don't currently have a CPU that fits into it. Now here's the stupid question... Would I be able to buy the E2180 and plug it in and power it up and flash the bios? or will the CPU just go on being undetected and I'll be SOL.

Thanks for tolerating my stupidity.

Did your friend update the BIOS when he got the board? What BIOS version is it currently running on? I agree with hennessy, fire it up and see if it works.

Thanks for the help guys, tried to see what would happen and it booted and allowed me into the BIOS (0701). It detected the 2160 i put in it but it would give me a CPU test error. It allowed me to flash the BIOS to 1604 using a USB Flash drive and I was all set. Again thanks for the suggestions.
