I'm assuming you're using a single-license copy of Windows. If that's the case then unfortunately in order to upgrade your motherboard you'd also need to get a new license for Windows, as the license is tied to your motherboard.

Hmm, BF4 multiplayer loves more cores and is graphically taxing. Depending on the resolution he games at, not having enough Vram might also be an issue. I would suggest liquidating both cpu/mobo and your GPU to expanding your budget a bit, and then get a FX-8350 and GTX 660. If you can sell your current parts at half the price you bought them at, you can afford the FX-8350, GTX 660, and a ~$80 motherboard.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor (£147.59 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: ASRock 970 EXTREME4 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£79.96 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card (£149.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £377.54

Your CPU is definitely the bottleneck in Planetside 2 and BF3. Luckily, your motherboard can take any Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge CPU with a BIOS update. IMHO the best use of funds would be to grab an i5 3470 for £156.
