New CPU and Video Card?

I have a Socket 939 board with an AMD 3500+ chip running an All in Wonder 9800 card with 3g of ram but it doesn't cut it anymore. I don't mind spending $500 to upgrade. Considering going to a high end Opteron processor and and the ATI 1950 pro but it's hard to know how that would play out compared to other scenarios. Any suggestions?

Socket 939 is all but dead. I wouldn't invest any money in that platform.
Go for a cheap core 2 set up and try your luck with overclocking.
2 gigs of cheap ddr2 is dirt cheap.
Throw in a 8800 series card and your set for a good while.

A core 2 cpu and motherboard should run you about 250.00$
ddr2 ram about 125.00.
8800 card around 275.00$

Thats 650.00$

Sell all your old stuff on ebay for at least 150.00$ and you have your 500.00$ limit.
