Hi Im building a conroe system with an E6300 and maybe an Abit AB9 board.
The main use for this PC will be music production, I needed a board with firewire port, and those having it were the +$200 Gygabytes or Asus ones. Then appeared this Abit mobo with decent reviews from Anandtech, and soo became my favourite. I'm not an overclocker, but tend to push sometimes things up a bit. I mainly work in FL Studio for professional dance-music work, and thats why decided to build a pc, cause my actual athlon 64 3000+ @ 2200mhz doesn't keep up with all my plugins and vsti's.
I hope this setup gets good results for cpu load with a lot of heavy-processing plugins, and that the Presonus Firebox I'll plug in the 1394 port works flawlessly. Altough I'm still considering other boards one of my concerns is that I dont need the extra lan jack, neither RAID, or e-sata. So I expect that the ICH8 southbridge is as good as the ICH8-R that the AB9 PRO has. I have also been considering the Asus P5B, (does not have 1394), and the Gigabyte 965p s3 (no 1394).
For memory I think It will be Corsair XMS2 (2x512) 6400 ddr2 ram ( I hope this doesn't limit a little OC), dont have experience with memory, but have seen a lot of people using gskill memory, are they any good?. Does 4x512 modules will perform better than 2x1gb? In the manual of the AB9 the higher value is 512megs, but I think thats just for illustrative purposes. You see, here in memory I have lots of doubts.
And for graphics my actual 6600gt or something without fan (you know, in studios everything should be silent.
For hard disk I dont know about the quality of Maxtors, recently I've had a lot of issues with them (damaged without reason and so).
I am waiting for your opinions and hope this serves well for others in the same position (Just need cpu power, no extras and add-ons).
Best.
PD: Yes, I've read a lot of threads about this...
