I just finished building a new system
asus p4pe
p4 2.53Ghz
1 gig ddr pc2700
ati radeon 9000 pro 128mb ddr
promise fasttrak tx2000 raid controller pci
2-western dig. 120Gig/7200/8mb RAID 0
win xp pro

anyway i am having trouble with the NEW CONNECTION WIZARD to configure my dsl connection
I follow the steps below:
1 Open Network Connections
2 Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and then click Next.
3 Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
4 Click Setup my connection manually, and then click Next.
5 Click Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password.

When i get to step 5 it will not allow me to choose that selection, the only selection that it will allow is:
CONNECT USING A BROADBAND CONNECTION THAT IS ALWAYS ON (THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE A USERNAME OR PASSWORD)
of course my dsl connection requires a usnername and password.

I just installed XP pro

Any help would be very much appreciated
thanks

Welcome to AnandTech Network Forum.

The Network Wizard is like Fast Food. Cheap but unhealthy (Fat & Cholesterol).

You are much better off configuring the settings manually.

Windows XP Home Networking Guide.

The above is for WinXP home, installing WinXP Pro is similar.

=================================================================

The DSL part of WinXP works with very limited amount of DSL connections.

In most cases in order to operated the DSL directly you need the PPPOE software provided by the ISP.

For DSL I would get a Cable/DSL Router even if you do not have Network.

The Router will keep your PPPOE alive independent from the computer, thus provide faster, and more stable connection. Not the mention the NAT firewall, DHCP and more.

If you are not familiar with the topic read this:

MoboMojo - you should start your own thread about your problem.

Spection - I had the same exact problem and it ended being a security issue. If you look in your event log, you'll probably see some services that didn't start due with an access denied or similar message. This was caused by me doing a repair install on the machine and then deleting the account I used to do the repair with assuming that the original account that was on the machine had all of the rights it needed since it was an admin account. The only solution I found was to do a complete reinstall of XP. (not a repair install)

There may have been an easier solution but since I didn't have internet access, I couldn't get onto to MS's Knowledgebase to look for answers.
