???New confirmation code for Office 2000 everytime I reformat???

I have installed office 2000 on both of my computers. Reformatted and reinstalled 2000 but it wont let me register because it said "this product is already registered with another computer" I had to call get a new confirmation number and the lady said I was only allowed to install it on 2 computers. But, every time I reformat I'm going to have to go thru this. Does anybody know a way around this??

This seems crazy, because what if I reformat once a week?

The lady also said I would have to buy an open liscense if I wanted it installed on more than 2 computers. This is crazy since I have 3 at home. And how do they know I did'nt take it off one and put it on another? Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Instead of reformatting that frequently, you could create an image of your h/d. That way all your license and programs are intact and you won't have to reinstall them. Check out a program called Ghost by symantec.

those are options, but what I'm saying is that once I have loaded the program twice, even if it is on the same computer, I am going to have to re-call and get a confirmation number. Heck, I have changed the operating system in my laptop 3 times in the last week. So from here on out for the next 4 years, everytime I choose to upgrade, reformat or sell, that I have to call and get an approval from Microsoft for software that I bought?

Is there any way around this without having to buy an open liscence, even though I'm not pirating software or reselling computers with their software on it. Just a normal user with 3 systems in my house. Thanks for the advice.

There isnt much you can do about it unfortunately, this is what MS is doing on all of their newer versions of Office2k and also what they are doing in the future for OfficeXP and WindowsXP.

Yes it is annoying, and yes it is ridiculous. Thank MS for it, as this is only the beginning of their 'plans'.

hmm.....i reloaded o2k at least 3 times...cuz of formats...never had a problem

does the autoupdate work if you dont reggy? i guess i never registered cuz ive always been able to upgrade.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the registration is required on shipping versions of Office 2000 with SP1 included, but not if you have an earlier version of Office 2000 and install SP1??? I have an early version but have been reluctant to install the SP1 update because I hate giving any more info to MS than I have too...

I have an original version of Office 2000 Standard that doesn't seem to have this registration thing on it.

Are you saying that if I install SP1 on my Office2K, that it will contact Microsoft and give them information about the version of Office I'm running? I was planning on installing SP1 soon, but there's no way I'm going to if it's going to autoregister for me.

I just called microsoft and explained the situation, told her I am always upgrading mobos, harddrives...etc, and she told me that I will have to continue calling to get a confirmation number everytime office 2k is re-installed. She said that I can avoid calling everytime I make a change by buying an open liscence. This makes it seem as if I am an oem reseller and not just someone who upgrades....anyone know how much one of these liscences cost? It just may be worth avoiding all the headaches!

Sukhoi,
Actually I was asking if this was the case rather than saying thats how it works... I haven't installed SP1 because I have been a little worried that it will install the registration requirement, but I don't know if in fact that is the case... Sorry if I created any confusion.

Adding SR1 to the original Office 2000 (in the U.S.) will not enable the "activation" procedure for Office. Some overseas customers of the original Office 2000 and, AFAIK, ALL customers who purchase the updated Office 2000 SR1 package encounter the activation process. You have to activate the software or it stops working after a while. It's a pain in the butt, but I suspect that Microsoft will honor repeated requests for new activation keys for personal customers -- up to a certain point. I don't know what the cutoff will be. I suspect we'll hear a lot more about it as Office XP and Windows XP come into common use.

I don't really know what they're thinking. I imagine that getting the activation key over the Internet will be easier than making the phone call. If Microsoft works hard at making the process less onerous that it looks like it might be, it may work out okay. I just shudder when I recall the days when outfits like Ashton-Tate shot themselves in the foot so many times that they bled to death.

Jim

Time to find a new wordprocessing program. I'm not putting up with this crap after I pay all that money. Luckily I got an early version.

The lady I spoke with said I will have to call everytime I reformat, upgrade or anytime I re-install, because it has already been registered twice (can only have it registered 2 times even if it is the same computer that has just been reformatted.) I think they need to make changes internally to avoid piracy, and not take it out on the paying consumer.

After all, what does this avoid if they will continually give me a confirmation everytime I call? It is only an inconvenience. They have no way to decipher whether I put it on 20 different systems or put it on my one machine 20 times. And I do have the new version w/ SR-1.

This is ridiculous...the way MS can stop piracy is by not charging so damn much for their software. More people would buy it if it wasn't so expensive...I know I'd be a lot more likely to buy it if it were reasonably priced. I hope someone finds a way to hack this, because I reformat one of my systems at least once a month I'll bet, and in the future I sure as hell am not going to hassle with this...

There was a write up at the Register a while ago on how to crack this, very simple. Although I forgot what it was, and am too lazy to find a link. (I might look for it later).

Damn it, this is something that would make me crazy... I would just crack the god damn thing even if I had it legally !! 😉 LOL

There was an article in my local newspaper about MicroShaft and how even the bigshots at ZDNet have accused M$ of riding the coattails of piracy until they reached market dominance and THEN deciding that it was time to advance anti-piracy actions all the while charging an arm and a leg for their products which were supposedly absorbing the cost of piracy itself. That way MicroShaft can have their cake and eat it too.

I say let's all download StarOffice.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up jaywallen. 🙂

SeaHarpWas this licensing "feature" mentioned anywhere when you bought Office 2000? If not, I say you call Microsoft and keep asking for the operator's supervisor and demanding an open license so you can use the software the way you intended. 🙂 You might get lucky once you get high enough , and get Microsoft to give you an open license. 🙂

I remember a while ago I was having problems getting the web space set up for my ISP. I made three calls to their low level tech support, and the people did nothing. They all said that it was working fine and didn't know what the problem was, even though I couldn't access my own space to upload files. 🙂 Finally on the 4th call I asked to speak to the supervisor immediately, and explained the situation. He had it fixed by the next day. 😉 Turns out that somehow when my account was activated, they forgot to activate my webspace too.
