I'm in the market for a 2nd setup. The 1st setup is a P3-450, so anything will be an improvement. Nothing in this config will be used in the new one--it's being re-tasked to be a Win2k or Linux server.
Just so everyone understands my priorities...I'll list them...
1. Stability
2. Future-proof -- I have been running a P3 for 4yrs
3. Speed
4. Overclock-ability -- Just to play with.
5. Games -- once in a while
6. Price
ok, so here is the setup...
ASUS p4s533 w/Audio & Lan
P4 - 1.6A (I might still go with a 2.0A)
Corsair XMS PC3000 512mb
IBM 80gb 7200
Leadtek Ti4400 (maybe Gainward or MSI depends on availability)
Liteon/Toshiba/Sony 16x DVD
Liteon CDRW 32x12x40 (don't cut enough to justify the 40x)
Antec 880 Case w/ 2 extra fans
MS Optical Mouse
MS Natural Keyboard
Name-brand floppy
LAN...on-board
Sound...may just use on-board for a while...otherwise Audigy Gamers.
Monitor...Sony G4xx 19"...I'd love an LCD but the price is a killer.
Plus Shipping but Excluding the Monitor & Sound...comes to about $1200 using GoogleGear & NewEgg.
The other mobo contender is the Abit BD7-RAID. I figure that I can start with the 1.6A, then upgrade in a year to a 2.4B (or better) for cheap. It seems the market is moving away from RDRAM to DDR (please don't start a flame-war over this...it's just what I've been reading). Everyone seems to agree the PC1000 is the ultimate in speed at the moment, but the future is questionable.
Comments Welcome!!!
Thanks
John
