I'm gonna have to call a big R on this. Even though it says JAN 2006, I've seen that set of three pictures back in 2005.

Sometimes you want that blurry background effect.

I would say that, very frequently, you want a blurred background. It helps the eye understand what its supposed to be looking at.

I'm irritated at the articles stupid use of the ambiguous and nonsensical phrase "after the fact." WTF do they mean? If the user can specify what should be in focus after the image data has been recorded, it doesn't say how...

How are our eyes able to focus at infiniti many distance at once. We should make a camera like our eyes.

I assume you'll have a choice between the two.

Just saw it in the issue that came a few days ago. Mabye the magazine picked up the story a little late.

it seems that they are taking a compilation of multiple pictures taken at different focal lengths.

I could also duplicate that shot with a standard camera, just using 3 images and combining them in photoshop. It's not hard.

You can't. But you can switch what you're focusing on very quickly. While you're focused on one thing you can't tell that everything else is out of focus because it's in your peripheral vision.

So why don't I just take 3 pictures and decide later which one I want. And why can't my camera recreate that last photo? Pretty much every point & shoot out there could take that picture.

yea, our eyes can get general focus, as can cameras, but not focus like this that is supposedly perfect.

Can't you do something similar by jacking up the f stop?

The higher the f stop the less the bokeh and more the entire image is in focus?

Indeed. But what they're saying is that this technology could be used in compact digital cameras, whereas now you'd need a DSLR to have such a broad aperture spectrum.

it uses multiple "small" lenses to create the picture. imagine a large sensor, covered with a layer of these lenses. each lens is allowed to focus independently.

and, yeah, big R. this is old news.
