New Computers - Windows Vista?

Hello. I'm purchasing a number of new computers for a small business. We tend to use our computers for several (5+) years and run them into the ground. Generally, we buy from Dell (I know, I know, much better hardware and deals abound but the boss wants to go with somebody 'safe').

Since we use our computers for quite a while, I would like them to be as strong/fast as possible for running Vista (so they will give us 5+ years again). It seems like the best processor would be the Intel Pentium 4 Processor 6xx (64 bit) processors. However, I'm a little concerned about printer drivers and software compatability (although we basically use MS Office and Quickbooks 2004 and thats about it).

The other options are the Pentium D Dual Core, the Pentium4 with HT (32bit), and the AMD64 (although I don't think Dell sells the AMD).

Based on our needs (not intensive computing requirements but wanting to make the purchase last as long as possible), what recommendations do you have? Is the Dual Core a better option than the P4 with HT? Or should I be OK with the 64 bit P4?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

MS and AMD have very strong relationships (AMD is always a prime sponsor of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference), so no fear. Dual-core is better than HT and AMD X2's are doing better than dual P4's with HT. Other considerations, 1GB of memory and probably nothing less than 80GB drives. DirectX 9 video with 256MB of memory (that will get you into Aero Glass range). DVD drive! (Vista is too big for a CD). If the folks are responsible for their own backups, make those writers (better still, redirect My Documents (lose the "My" in Vista) to the user's folder on the server and backup the user areas from the server). Vista will ship in both 32 and 64 bit flavors. No fear on getting left out in the 32-bit world - the last time we did this, it took about 4 years to get the "16-bit" out.

AMD X2 4200's would probably be my choice for a business computer that will have a long shelf live.

Go with HP/Compaq. They sell AMD, which is nearly always a better value than Intel. Even if you go with an Intel-powered system, HP/Compaq usually offers better deals than Dell.

I was thinking the same thing, but just checked and the business machines don't, yet. Workstations do though (9300 = Dual Opteron). Sigh.

I'm not sure what you mean. HP does indeed sell AMD-powered business desktops. However, I don't see any reason to go through the business store. The home office store will do just fine for a small business, and will probably be cheaper.
