New computer

Yesterday my old computer started acting up. Its pretty old, an alienware from around 2001 or so. It was acting weird, not loading programs so i restarted. As soon as it started to reboot, it gave me the error "read disk error, Press ctrl Alt Delete to restart".

Im pretty sure somthings very wrong with it. I had been contimplating upgrading for quite some time, but after reading up i found that Windows Vista would be comming out in *what i hear* under a year. So I thought id wait till till like second generation dx10 cards come out..... I wanted to get a new computer, but decided that it would probably be better to wait it out. Now im not sure what to do, as Im going to a university and need a computer, and im also a avid gamer. So i need to at least have some computer. Im not sure if i want to do without a gamind rig for a whole year just to wait for Vista, thats a long time.

So can anyone help me out? I would have around 1.5-2k to spend on a new computer... I was looking at CyperPowered Systems, but im not really sure what I should be looking for. I know dual core, 1 gig ram seem standard now.

Can someone help me out in my sticky sitation? I really need a computer for school, but should I wait for the next round of big improvements to really upgrade to a gaming computer? Im at my last two years of college, and im sure afterwards I wont have as much time to game. Is it really worth waiting, a long time.... should i just get a new pc now?

I know some might say to build my own, but thats not really an option. I really have limited knowlege of how to build a PC and such. What are some good builders out there? I know cyber powered systems and a few other big names. I just want a solid computer with good customer service. If anyone has any experience with CPS or any other companies let me know. I know this is a large post, so i appreciate any respsonses. Thanks!

um did ur system come with reinstall disks system recovery or winxp or 2000 disk? if so there u go i think u just need to reinstall your os and then hold off until vista comes out! u can buy oem win pro for 150 i think way cheaper than getting a new compy for right now

So you think Vista will be that big of a upgrade? I know that its going to be a while until it comes out, just not sure how long.

I wonder if reinstalling will fix the unreadable disk. Im not sure whats wrong with the hard drive.

IMO don't what for vista. It will be buggy and for the first year not offer anything over XP.

For your system I wiuld wait for the new socket set from AMD. Its a month or 2 out. It should be pretty stable since it only a socket and memory controller change.

It hard to even tell anyone to weait for anew video card. Thye come so fast you will always be waiting. Just what you can afford.

Personally, I have mixed views on Cyberpower or Ibuypower. I think they do have some really good deals at times. Althought I don't think they carefully check what is compatible or incompatible. A few friends have bought from cyberpower but almost always I have to tweak them a bit to get to run a bit more stable. Usually voltage settings and the like. I found one cyberpower that the inspector forgot to plug the little 4 pin power connector on the mobo?! Then there are others that are rock solid great builds. My take on it? As long as you are not afraid of getting into the guts of the computer, both physically and in the bios, then I say go for it. Other wise you should make sure you got a computer guru fluent in that stuff. Cyberpower does offer some high end components, it just takes a little bit more tweaking to get everything going.

Thanks for the good information guys.

Kainthelongshot, what kind of tweaking do you have to do to the computer to get them to run optimal? Im not really that great at all with computers, if i was... i would build my own🙂 I have a few friends that are good with computers, but i definetly couldnt tell if anything was wrong by opening up the case. Im more of a car guy heh. Makes me a little leary of buying from them, but my brother got a pc from them that seems sold.

Know of any other pc builders that make a solid pc without charging an arm and a leg? Any info would e appreciated. Thanks.
